MTG: Weekly EDH – Top Five – Dino Dominion
The Spider and the Vampire swap places, but none can unseat the Discovering Dinos. Here are this week’s Magic: The Gathering’s top EDH Commanders.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.
EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.
Pantlaza, Sun-Favored
Pantlaza holds strong in the top spot, and it’s no surprise. With all the ways to cheat out powerful creatures and bombshell spells you can load into this deck, Mr. Pants is easily the most accessible and powerful Commander on the market for now. Plus, he’s a nice break from Atraxa, which everyone is used to seeing.
Gishath, Sun’s Avatar
Gishath put up a valiant effort to defeat his smaller companion, but sometimes bigger isn’t better. That’s not to say Gisath is a bad choice; he can still pump out a lot of Dinosaurs, and if your deck is high creature, that can be good. However, his deck is also much more allergic to board wipes.
Hakbal of the Surging Soul
My boy is still going strong right in the middle, and I’m not surprised. The only Merfolk that could ever hope to unseat Kumena, Hakbal still brings the power with both things Simic loves: landfall and card advantage, with a little buff for spice. Add in a few landfall triggers, and he’ll be a menace in no time.
Tymna the Weaver
With a spectacular streak, Tymna refuses to concede a Top Five spot, even moving up a seat this week. Life gain is such an easy thing in Orzhov, enabling you to spend it as a resource with no qualms. Plus, Tymna will never be alone, so you can splash in whatever colors suit your fancy.
Edgar Markov
The Vampire general has lost a bit of his edge this week, but not enough to knock him out of the Five. With all the vampire support in Ixalan, plus the Markov and Voldaren pieces from Innistrad, he can still go hard in the paint and leave your opponent bloodless.
