D&D: ‘Surviving Strangehollow’ Brings A Hand Painted 5th Edition Setting to Life
From the makers of the Faith No More RPG comes a new project: Surviving Strangehollow, a 5E supplement based in a watercolor world.
Inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places. The folks at Accidental Cyclops know this well. You might know the name from The Real Thing, the Faith No More RPG. And if you didn’t, well, you’re welcome. This is a real thing (pun intended) that exists, and you can go play.
But the latest inspiration for Accidental Cyclops’ newest work is just as delightful. The hand-painted art of Emily Hare. You might be most familiar with Hare’s monsters, whose distinctive style puts them in a world with a dangerously whimsical, Alice in Wonderland-esque feel to it.
You know it the second you see it. And now, Accidental Cyclops, Emily Hare, and a hit list of amazing RPG writers, including Ed “I Invented The Forgotten Realms” Greenwood (I assume that’s his nickname, nobody’s told me different), Shawn Merwin, and Dael Kingsmill, are teaming up to bring you Surviving Strangehollow.
Surviving Strangehollow
Surviving Strangehollow is a new campaign supplement for 5th Edition based on the artwork of Emily Hare. Per their announcement:
Surviving Strangehollow is a 350-page supplement based on the imagination and artwork of Emily Hare. Designed equally for players and DMs, Surviving Strangehollow provides new player options, as well as dozens of interesting and dangerous creatures and encounters to enhance everyone’s gaming experience.
Surviving Strangehollow shines with meticulously hand-painted artwork. The creatures are a focal point of the book, and each is designed to be an adventure unto itself. Dive into a setting reminiscent of Jules Vern, Alice in Wonderland, and The Ghost and the Darkness.
The world is fleshed out with “short stories and rich narratives,” but what will be most exciting to new-stuff-hungry players and DMs are the new toys that the supplement brings to 5E.
There are “10+ new subclasses,” which I’m going to assume means 11 or 12, and on top of that, Surviving Strangehollow will introduce a new class: the Channeller. You’ll also be able to play as an undead creature known as a Skulk. There are new backgrounds, feats, spells, magic items, and the main course: more than 60 new creatures, each fleshed out beautifully with art and encounter ideas and all the monster facts you’d want.
And, of course, adventures to use these new toys in. And from an amazing team. The list includes:
- Shawn Merwin
- Ed Greenwood
- Elisa Teague
- Dael Kingsmill
- James Haeck
- Erin Roberts
- Bryan CP Steele
…and many more. It’s a veritable hit list of RPG writers. Surviving Strangehollow is coming to crowdfunding in 2024.
