Pathfinder 2E’s New ‘Monster Core’ Book Shows Off Remastered Mummy
Pathfinder’s new Monster Core rulebook is due out soon, and with it, updated, remastered monsters. Today, we saw the new Mummy.
Now that Pathfinder 2E has remastered its rules, with the Pathfinder Player Core and GM Core rulebook updates, things are spinning along smoothly for Paizo. Earlier, they showed off a look at the new monster book, Pathfinder 2E Monster Core, which is due out later this year. In it, monsters get a fresh coat of paint. Including overhauled rules, replacements for OGL content, and more.
The Monster Core book will feature a ton of favorite monsters, remastered. You’ll get monsters from across the Bestiaries. As Paizo puts it, they intend this to be a collection of “greatest hits” including several Pathfinder 1st Edition monsters like the Bogwids and Sagassum Heap.
Alongside this, there’s a focus on making them more like the mythological stories that inspired them. With more stat blocks, more monsters, and more lore, the Monster Core book is shaping up to be pretty neat. But let’s take a look at some of the new favorites.
Pathfinder 2E – Remastered Monsters in Monster Core
In a blog post, Paizo outlines some of the behind the scenes process at play by showing off the new rules for mummies:
Let’s take a moment to go over an example of a smaller change. Mummies, beyond being classic horror monsters, make for great undead to include in musty tombs and dungeons. But the Bestiary version was primarily based on causing despair and imposing a rotting curse. They can be pretty static, so we were looking for something new to put into our basic mummies to make them more interesting, much like we reassessed them when creating new mummies for Book of the Dead.
Since the mummy guardian and mummy pharaoh were originally created with sophisticated chemical processes, we landed on an alchemical theme. You can see the special actions the mummy guardian can now use in combat, and how they reinforce the creature’s theme in a unique way!
To that end, we get a look at the Mummy Guardian stat block:
As you can see, the Mummy Guardian has more options for combat based on their alchemical theme. As mummies are created via alchemical processes, they now have a vulnerability to alchemical items, which may encourage players to use them more often. They also have the ability to cause creatures to take damage and become sickened when drinking potions.
It’s a simple thing but it makes mummies a lot more dynamic to deal with.
Look for more updates on the Monster Core coming soon!
