The ‘Mutant Year Zero’ RPG Goes to Space February 13 with ‘Ad Astra’ Expansion
Mutant: Year Zero, the post-apocalyptic RPG that opened the doors for Free League Publishing, goes to space with a new expansion.
Mutant: Year Zero is an RPG that takes place in the sort of post-apocalyptic world you know well even if you’ve never heard the specifics of it. People scavenge in ruins and have weird slang and abbreviations. But MYZ is also the game that got it all going for Free League. From the Year Zero Engine, the RPG rules system that powers the game, came Free League’s other titles, like Tales from the Loop or Vaesen or Alien, the RPG.
And now, the game that started it all heads for the stars in a new expansion. Now you can see what the state of the solar system is in the world of Mutant Year Zero. It was once the only place where you could find peace and solace. At least until a bunch of post-apocalyptic explorers come crashing into it.
Mutant: Year Zero RPG – Ad Astra Expansion
Through the tiny portholes of the space capsule, you see the city hanging weightlessly beneath the stars – like a huge hanging mobile over Earth, the poisoned cradle of humanity. Drawing closer, it becomes clear that there is something wrong with this star city. You float past large holes, torn wires, and cracked satellite dishes. It seems the Apocalypse reached all the way to the heavens.
The thrusters of your capsule push you onward through the maze of wires and ladders. Drawing closer, it becomes clear that there is something wrong with this star city. You float past large holes, torn wires, and cracked satellite dishes. It seems the Apocalypse reached all the way to the heavens.
So what is Ad Astra? In a nutshell, it’s a new campaign module. This module continues the campaign begun in the Path to Eden campaign, in the core rulebook for Mutant: Year Zero. But you can also play it as a standalone adventure.
Either way, the campaign module includes a ton of rules for playing Mutant: Year Zero in space. So you can throw out the whole story altogether, and just create your own space campaign. Especially since the book also acts as a gazetteer of the Solar System, at least as it stands in Year Zero’s world.
Ad Astra is written by Jens Alm and illustrated by Kim W. Andersson, an award-winning comic book writer and artist. His works include Love Hurts, Astrid and Alena, the latter of which was adapted into a Swedish film of the same name.
You can pre-order the book now, and get a PDF copy for free.
