‘Transformers’ World-Eating Deity: Unicron Explained
Planet-sized and known for eating worlds whole, Unicron is one of the biggest and most dangerous characters in the Transformers universe.
Unicron is one of the biggest characters in the Transformers universe. Physically, that is. While some of the transformers are large by human standards, his scale reaches planetary proportions. But who is this tremendous transformer and how will he be appearing in the upcoming movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts?
Publication History & Creation
The evil planet eater first appeared in the 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, where he was voiced by none other than Orson Welles. You know, Orson Welles of Citizen Kane fame. Since then, he has appeared in quite a few titles in the Transformers series including Atari’s 2004 Transformers video game and Michael Bay’s 2017 film, Transformers: The Last Knight. However, in this movie, he is a character with no spoken lines and we only see him appear as the planet Earth and six mechanical horns.
It’s not clearly known just how big Unicron is, nor is it consistently shown from appearance to appearance.
Unicron’s Origins
Before the dawn of time, Order, Chaos, and an extra-dimensional being called The One existed alone. In order to explore the newly forming universes, The One created a new being, Unicron. Then he divided Unicron in two, creating his twin, Primus.
In his first appearance on-screen he is introduced as a world eater and offers to build a defeated and drifting Megatron a new body in exchange for destroying the only thing that can stand in his way; the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Unicron is later destroyed by this same Matrix, leaving just his head which becomes one of the new moons of Cybertron.
He is later woken, partially assembled, and betrayed a number of times. At one point after being destroyed, Unicron places his consciousness within Megatron, causing them both to be destroyed.
In Transformers Prime and later in Transformers: The Last Knight, it is revealed that Unicron is the Earth. Quintessa plans to drain the energy from Unicron to restore Cybertron, but this would destroy the Earth in the process.
In the upcoming Transformers: Rise of the Beast, Unicron will probably be playing a bigger part as the Autobots are aided by the Maximals, preacons, and Terrorcons to protect the Earth from Unicron’s arrival.
Powers & Abilities
Like all of the Transformers. Unicron can transform. He usually takes the form of a gigantic robot, but he can also transform into a world. He can also consume entire worlds and all of the life on them.
Unlike the other Transformers, Unicron is effectively a deity. He is immortal, telepathic, and senses things across dimensions. In some instances, he can even warp reality, resurrect the dead, use other planets as his new body, and travel through dimensions and black holes. Unicron also has a collection of Anti-Bots and drones to protect and fight for him.
