Warhammer: The Old World – ‘How To Play’ Video Covers The Basics
If you were trying to introduce Warhammer: The Old World to a completely new player this new Games Workshop video is a good start.
Warhammer: The Old World is launching this weekend with the Pre-orders going up. That means GW is going to be unleashing the game to the masses soon enough. This is a pretty big deal for them! With that in mind they’ve released a new “How To Play” video that’s really more of an introduction to the game.
“You’re mere weeks away from getting to play Warhammer: The Old World yourself! To get you in the mindset, we’ve prepared an official How to Play video which covers all the basics of fighting grand battles featuring wheeling regiments, bolts of magic, and massive monsters in the World of Legend.”
More of a Game Demo Than ‘How To’
The video released really just covers the highlights of the game and briefly touches on the basics. This feels more like a demo or a trailer for a “How To Play” video. That said, share it with your friends that might be interested in the game and just want a brief overview — it’s a good start.
Really, if you want to get into playing the game you’re going to want to do some reading. Thankfully, the previews of the rules have been pretty exhaustive with some solid examples of gameplay. Strategy, Movement, Shooting, and Combat phases have all been covered. There’s even more of a deep dive into Psychology, Magic, and the return of the Universal Special Rules.
While these are really good examples nothing beats having the core rules in your hands. And those are coming soon with the release of the starter sets.
We’ll be covering those in more detail later on. But the final thing to note is the factions that are going to be available to play as in Warhammer: The Old World.
The starter sets are only covering two of these nine factions. We’re going to have to wait and see what happens when the rest of these armies come out along with their respective books. I’m curious to see how GW updates/reintroduces these miniature lines once again.
It’s BACK, baby!
Old World, New Rules
From the tidbits we have seen thus far the actual ruleset looks promising. If you’re a fan of rank-and-file (or rank-and-flank now, according to GW) miniatures games then you’re going to enjoy this one. It’s got a lot of the classic elements from Warhammer: Fantasy Battles mixed in with some new lessons to learn. The core rules are going to feel very familiar to anyone who’s played a Warhammer game before. Really, it’s just going to be relearning how to add up all those combat modifiers once again. Oh and trying not to get flanked…that’s gonna be a big one.
Anyhow, the release date is coming very soon. So be prepared to re-engage with Warhammer: The Old World. Soon, it’s going to feel like it never left.
Is it finally time to start a Tomb Kings Army?!
