Evil Hat Announces Official ‘Tomb Raider’ RPG
Evil Hat announced, of all things, an official Tomb Raider RPG coming in 2025. Yeah, that Tomb Raider—with Lara Croft and everything.
Evil Hat announced a new roleplaying game in development, an officially licensed Tomb Raider RPG. A surprising move, all things considered, since there hasn’t been a new Tomb Raider game since Shadow of the Tomb Raider came out half a decade ago. But, the world of hidden artifacts and the people who raid tombs for them, is coming soon to a tabletop near you.
In the new RPG, Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth, you’ll play as a team of “Truth Seekers” out to uncover long-buried secrets while stopping those who would use them for eeeevil. You know the drill. You’ve played a Tomb Raider game.
Evil Hat Announces Tomb Raider RPG for 2025
The game uses a blend of Powered-by-the-Apocalypse and Forged-in-the-Dark rulesets, which is an interesting statement, considering that the one is a hack of the other. But presumably, this refers to the team-building aspect of the game. From the announcement, you’re not just a single Truth Seeker, but rather a whole team with dedicated roles and specialties:
In this officially licensed tabletop RPG you play members of the Truth Seekers: contemporaries of Lara Croft who strive to reveal long-hidden knowledge and thwart those who would steal and exploit artifacts for their own gains. It is a game of action, exploration, and self-discovery. Face perilous challenges and tough choices as you learn what it takes to be a hero.
Your group will collectively create their Team using one of the Team Playbooks and then build individual Team members choosing from the Crafter, Scholar, Hunter, Companion, Legacy, Changed, and Reclaimer. One player, the Keeper of Truths, describes the dynamic and compelling world around the Team as they all make the connections which bring the adventure to life.
You can see a little of that at work here, with playbooks like The Hunter, The Changed, The Crafter, and The Companion.
Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth has been in development for more than a year now. And while Evil Hat doesn’t expect it to go to crowdfunding and shipping until 2025, which is a long way off, a public playtest is on the way. So you can give the Tomb Raider RPG a shake much sooner than you’d think.
