The Lone Wolf: The Huntress trilogy continues the 40-year history of slaying Giaks in “choose-you-own-adventure” style RPG gamebooks.

When most people think of a Choose Your Own Adventure style of book, they usually think of simple and straightforward reading. But mixed with the occasional:

  • If you take the left path, go to Page 37
  • If you take the right path, read an extra paragraph, then go to Page 37
  • If you take the center path, start over from Page 1

It really stretches the definition of “game”. But the Lone Wolf series has so much more to offer. There’s combat, inventory, skills, level-up mechanics, magic, and tons more, all in a book! In fact, it’s been going strong since 1984, and I still have several of my original copies!

Just a few months back, we looked at Lone Wolf: Fortress of Death. It uses the Sound Realms platform to create a podcast with branching paths of fantasy adventure. And now, Lone Wolf is back to the written word with The Huntress trilogy.

New Mechanics Never Before Seen Gamebooks

Even with how much gameplay is crammed into a single Lone Wolf book normally, The Huntress promises even more, including multiple endings and pathways, using mechanics never seen before in gamebooks, such as night and day cycles, time travel, and exciting moment-to-moment decisions.

I’m so intrigued by the time-travel mechanics

Additionally, the books feature 110 pieces of new art from Fighting Fantasy artist Gary Ward, including new maps and action charts, as well as covers designed by Christopher Shy, the founder of Ronin Studios and known for his work on such series as God of War and Call of Duty.
