Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Shadowcat Is Ready To Phase Into Action
Atomic Mass Games is taking a closer look at Shadowcat AKA “Kitty” Pryde in Marvel: Crisis Protocol!
Katherine “Kitty” Pryde is coming to phase through all sorts of things in Marvel: Crisis Protocol as she’s making her debut on the tabletop. We already took a look at her boxed set with Iceman and today we’re taking a closer look at rules.
“Katherine “Kitty” Pryde started suffering from severe headaches when she was thirteen years old. Unbeknownst to her, they were caused by her mutant powers awakening. Those powers attracted the attention of both the Hellfire Club and the X-Men. Emma Frost and Charles Xavier attempted to recruit her. Thanks to the Hellfire Club’s underhanded ways of doing so she enrolled in Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and became the youngest member of the X Men.”
Shadowcat – Katherine “Kitty” Pryde
Starting off with Shadowcat’s stats, she’s got some rather straightforward defenses with 3 dice each and only 5 health. However, she’s only a Threat 3 and has a Long move which is actually very handy with her other abilities.
Her basic builder attack is Phasing Strike which is only 4 dice. However, it’s got some sneaky extras. For example, the defenders don’t get to count crits for defense AND they don’t get the extra die from rolling crits. Furthermore, if you get a wild during the roll you also get a free range 1 move for Shadowcat, too. That’s kind of a neat way to get even more speed out of her.
Get’em Lockheed! is another builder option — although you only get 1 energy after the attack. It’s also 4 dice but on a wild you cause Incinerate to your target. And for her final attack we have Intangible Assault which is her big spender. It’s range 3 and 7 dice for 3 energy. Again, the defender doesn’t get the crit bonuses for defense! If you get a wild you get to place Shadowcat with range 2. So, in many ways, this is just an even better Phasing Strike.
On her injured side, nothing really changed. She still has Stealth so enemies have to be within range 3 to target her. She also has Phase Rush which allows you to spend 2 energy to place her within range 2 of her current position. It’s worth noting that all of her “movement tech” abilities are also “place” effects, not movement.
Her final ability is Can’t Touch This which is a reactive superpower. This has a few effects that are applied. The first is that it’s a nice bonus of 2 dice for defense against physical or energy attacks. The extra part is that if the target is Pushed or Thrown by the attack then you also get a chance to place the target within range 1 of itself.
Again, Shadowcat has a bunch of nice movement tech abilities that can get your characters where you need them to be — either on an objective, out of harm’s way, or in a more advantageous position to strike. She adds utility to any team and seems like a bargain for 3 Threat. If you’ve got room in your roster Shadowcat makes for a great extraction character.
You can get both Shadowcat and Iceman in their character pack which is current up for pre-order from Asmodee right now. The official release date is March 1, 2024.
How can you stop a character that can phase in and out?!?
