MTG: War Never Changes – More Reveals from the “Fallout” Set
The Vault is nearly open, and a wealth of amazing Universe Beyond cards from the Fallout universe are headed our way in just two short weeks!
Welcome, Praetors and Planeswalkers! If you’re like me, your love of all things nerdy extends out of the CCG world and into video games. As a die-hard RPG fan, the Fallout series has always been a personal favorite of mine. I love the idea of trekking through an irradiated wasteland filled with ghouls, trying to survive against the horrors of the new world.
Well, now you can do all that AND play a game of Commander with your friends, thanks to the upcoming Universes Beyond set. This set includes four preconstructed Commander decks full to the brim with Fallout-themed reprints and brand-new cards. WeeklyMTG cranked open the Vault today with a few previews, kicking off the release season. We might have to wait until March to get our hands on these shiny new cards, but at least we know what we’re in for.
New Heroes
Though the Wanderer is the primary hero of Fallout, there are several other important characters that they meet along the way. Some are friends, some are enemies, and some will be both, depending on how you act toward their group.
The four decks have a wealth of famous faces, like Liberty Prime, the massive automaton warrior enlisted by the Brotherhood of Steel in their war against Communism. These heroes span every game in the Fallout franchise. Even if they don’t get a full card, they flesh out the fantastic world of the game. Commander Sofia, for example, is from the recent MMO Fallout 76, and her ability is based on the quest she features in. There are almost 400 new cards headed our way, so there’s a lot to look forward to.
Returning Favorites
Not everything in the new decks is brand new, and several of the pieces are reprints with gorgeous new art. I’m a big fan of the Guardian Project, which is from all the way back in Fallout 1. It depicts the deformed Master trying to turn the entire wasteland into Super Mutants. There are tons of other reprints, though, like Heroic Intervention and a suspiciously Deathclaw-like Lhurgoyf. Of course, you’ll also be treated to brand new treatments for the two primary Commander staples: Sol Ring and Arcane Signet.
MORE Bobbleheads
The collection of bobbleheads was one of the fun side quests in Fallout, and their MTG equivalent doesn’t disappoint. Each one acts as a mana rock and gives you an ability based on the number you have. If you get enough on the field to spell out S.P.E.C.I.A.L., you’ll have a wealth of exciting abilities. Perception, for example, lets you cast a low-cost spell for free. You’ll definitely want to get your hands on these Vault-Boy collectibles.
