Pre-Order ‘The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons’ and get a History Book for Nerds
One of the big books for D&D’s 50th anniversary is a history of the 1st Edition of D&D with an enormous title that you can pre-order now.
As D&D turns 50 this year, Wizards of the Coast is pulling out many of the stops for their celebration. They’re also a little bit short-staffed in the wake of Hasbro layoffs, and still recovering goodwill from the OGL debacle at the beginning of last year. But with a new edition on the way, and a major milestone year ahead, WotC looks back on D&D in a big way.
In June, WotC will release The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977. It’s a clunky title for a chunky book. Just look at how big this thing is.
In it, you’ll find a deep dive through the origins of D&D. With new documents, notes, and even index cards that detail the history of RPGs from their origins in Braunsteins to the creation of Cavaliers & Roundheads and Chain Mail and its fantasy supplements, to the first draft of D&D.
A first draft of the rules, that, while never-before-seen in print, is featured in this book. It is “typed on Gygax’ home typewriter,” and will shed new light on D&D, if you’re into that sort of thing. The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons is a history book for nerds. And it’s one that you can pre-order today.
The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons – Up for Pre-Order
The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977 delves into the history behind the game’s inception. Jon Peterson, one of the game’s foremost historians, walks readers through a curated collection of documents that, woven together, reveal how D&D went from an idea to a beloved tabletop roleplaying game. A never-before-seen first draft of D&D written in 1973 by Gary Gygax can be found within this incredible book.
This book looks back at the earliest supplements. Not just the White Box set, which most folks are familiar with. But back at the actual pamphlets that were the first iteration of D&D. These were “books” you could only order through the mail. There was no store. No catalog. You had to order them from “TSR” aka Gary Gygax’ house.
A house to which he invited people in the area to swing by and try the game on Sundays. At any rate, if you’re interested in seeing the nitty, gritty history of the original D&D. If you want to explore the earliest origins of the game, complete with handwritten notes and annotations:
