A new pirate RPG heads to Backerkit from the makers of Avatar: Legends; check out Magpie Games’ Rapscallion: Strange Pirate Adventures.

Pirates are having another day in the sun. They never really go out of style, they just sort of change the way they’re depicted and varying levels of villainy accompany them. Twenty years ago, Renaissance faires near you exploded with Captain Jack-alikes from Pirates of the Caribbean and or members of the Going Merry from the relatively new anime One Piece.

But history and fashion and all that kind of thing is cyclical. Today, we have Our Flag Means Death and the live-action One Piece, plus multiple pirate video games, from Sea of Thieves to Skull and Bones. It’s a great time to decide that you are a pirate, as long as you don’t download a car.

At any rate, Magpie Games, makers of Avatar: Legends and the Root RPG, have a new game coming to Backerkit in a few short weeks. Check out Rapscallion: Strange Pirate Adventures.

Rapscallion – A New Pirate Fantasy RPG From the Makers of Avatar: Legends

Magpie Games revealed details of the new game in a press release.

The Royal Navy has been hot on your trail for weeks. The Pirate Kings want your head after your ghostly bosun managed to steal the night-black void orb from their hidden trove on that volcanic sky-island. You know you should feel worried, but all you see—looking out across the deck of your ship, standing next to your cyclopean cook and your possibly-possessed-first-mate—is the vast blue ocean. The salt air brushes against your face, softer than any lover you’ve ever had. You can’t imagine feeling more free.

Rapscallion is a tabletop roleplaying game in which you play a rambunctious crew of pirates, testing their luck against the unpredictable winds of Fate. The full version of Rapscallion—coming to Backerkit on March 19th, 2024—features a 250+ page rulebook packed with new playbooks, updated rules, full color art, and a complete set of factions, antagonists, and locations for use at your table. We can’t wait for you to join the crew and sail these open seas!

Rapscallion, like Avatar and Root, will be using the Powered-by-the-Apocalypse rules framework.  If you’re familiar at all, you know to expect some flavorful basic moves, as well as Playbooks that emulate a number of piratical arrrchetypes, if you will. Examples include

  • The Captain
  • The Chronicler
  • The Swashbuckler
  • The Mountebank
  • The Navigator
  • The Shiprat

And a whole lot more. You can take the rules for a test drive with a free Quickstart that’s available now on DriveThruRPG. See what the game is all about, but do keep in mind that this is an early version; the Quickstart will be updated once the Kickstarter is live. Presumably, with more of the content from the full 250+ page rulebook.
