‘The Old Guard 2’ – Long Awaited Sequel Gets Promising Update from One of Its Stars
The Old Guard 2 has been in limbo for several years, but a recent interview with star Matthias Schoenaerts offers fans some hope.
The undying live among us, protecting us from danger for the right amount of cash. Now, they have to battle to preserve their way of life and keep their secrets from falling into the right hands. It’s a gritty and action-packed story that shows that living forever isn’t easy.
The first movie follows a tight-knit group of undying mercenaries led by a warrior named Andy. They’ve fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. Their latest emergency mission exposes their extraordinary abilities. It’s up to Andy and the newest recruit, Nile, to eliminate the threat of an organization that wants to replicate and monetize their immortal powers by any means necessary.
You can watch it on Netflix now. It has passing RT scores and the cast is great. Plus, the stunt team has great resumes (including work on John Wick and Black Panther).

The sequel was greenlit in 2021 and wrapped filming in 2022. Due to changes behind the scenes at Netflix (the studio’s Chairman of Film has switched hands more than once) and the strikes last summer, work on the sequel was set aside for a bit. Star Matthias Schoenaerts provided an update during an interview with Collider.
“We shot it approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production As far as I’ve understood, I think there’s been a switch at Netflix high up. I think there’s a different CEO, so that leads to a reconsidering of release, and how and when, and that’s not up to me. I don’t know. But I know we’re hitting the last stage of post-production, so it’s gonna show up at some point.”
He also spoke positively about new director Victoria Mahoney, who took over for Gina Prince-Bythewood, and working with the returning cast.
Returning and New Cast
The franchise is based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka, and stars Charlize Theron as Andy aka Andromache of Scythia, KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, Marwan Kenzari as Joe / Yusuf Al-Kaysani, Luca Marinelli as Nicky / Nicolò di Genoa, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker / Sebastian Le Livre, Vân Veronica Ngô as Quỳnh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Copley. Plus, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.
The second movie doesn’t have a release date just yet. The fact that it’s in post is a good sign, though.
