Age of Sigmar: New Edition Previews Ahead – Loads of Changes Coming Soon
Games Workshop has busted out a new teaser video to hype the new edition. Massive changes are ahead for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar!
The announcement dropped at AdeptiCon 2024 and there’s a new edition of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar inbound. To get the hype train rolling, GW dropped a new video with a lightning quick summary of a tons of changes ahead. You’re going to want to watch this one:
“We’ll soon have a lot more to say on everything mentioned in this video and much more besides. Suffice it to say for the time being that the new warscrolls are smart without sacrificing nuance, the double turn is now a much tougher choice, and the turn structure is so much more reactive – you’ll be hoarding precious Command points to respond at the most crucial moments.”
Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – New Edition Changes Preview
At this point, we’ve watched the video a few times and compiled a list of the changes mentioned. Did we catch them all? Let us know in the comments!
Spearhead
- New way to play using new Spearhead boxes.
- Army boxes represent a complete and balanced army. Each box has their own rules which will be available to download for free.
- Most games will take less than an hour to play.
Revamped Rules
- New modular approach to the rules. “Learn the rules you need, when you need them.”
- Rules are now more “interactive” so that players will be able to “cast spells or even charge” in your opponents turn.
- Changes to the Priority. “You’ll have to pay a heavy cost if you want to take that tempting double turn.”
- More impactful battlefield terrain.
- Streamlined army list building.
- More reactive command system/command points
- New “Underdog” mechanic to ensure “nail-biting finishes” to your games.
Factions Packs, Battletomes, & More
- Current Battletomes will no longer be valid.
- Every faction in the game will have a new “Faction Pack” which you can download for free on launch day.
- Faction Packs will have all your rules you need to play your army: Warscrolls, Battle Traits, Battle Formations, Heroic Traits, Artifacts of Power, Prayers, Spells, and more.
- Points Values will not be included in factions packs and will instead be available online at launch.
Matched Play
- All of the Battleplans and Tactics from the new General’s Handbook will be included in the launch box
Path To Glory
- Revamp of these rules to focus on Heroes and Unit progression.
There’s more changes coming for sure. It’s going to be interesting to see how GW manages to rebalance everything at launch as well. The current state of play for the AoS meta is fairly balanced (according to the win-rate data). Now, GW is basically blowing all that up with a new edition and a massive rules overhaul. Make no mistake: this is going to be a major edition change as these are foundational game changes.
Honestly, the more I’m hearing about the new edition, the more it’s sounding a lot like some of the changes from the 40k launch. It’s checking a lot of the same boxes and talking points — that’s not a bad thing! The 40k 10th edition launch was fairly smooth with everyone getting their rules in Index form on day one. This new edition of AoS seems to be following that same pattern.
I still want to get my hands on this Army of Renown…
