D&D: Every Classic Adventure in ‘Quests from the Infinite Staircase’ Revealed
Roll20 has unveiled every classic adventure featured in the upcoming Quests from the Infinite Staircase adventure anthology.
With Tales from the Yawning Portal, WotC began a tradition of taking old modules and converting them to 5th Edition. Classic modules from older editions had fresh life breathed into them. And once more adventurers trudged through the halls of The Sunless Citadel or the Tomb of Horrors.
And that tradition continues with a new adventure anthology coming later this year, Quests from the Infinite Staircase, another gathering of classic D&D Adventures, this time inspired by the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Though there’s quite a bit more to it. Which adventures, exactly?
Glad you asked. Roll20 has revealed every adventure included in Quests from the Infinite Staircase. So gear up, and get ready to tumble down the stairs of nostalgia.
Quests from the Infinite Staircase – All Adventures Revealed!
What’s truly exciting is that these are some of the weirder adventures that old-school D&D has to offer. Including the perennial favorite, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks which has a spaceship full of aliens and robots crash right into your fantasy world. Here’s a look at the full list:
The Infinite Staircase spirals in a dreamlike expanse, with doors leading to fantastic realms. It’s home to the noble genie Nafas, who hears wishes made throughout the multiverse and recruits heroes to fulfill them. These pleas summon adventurers to lost caverns suffused with planar energy, fairytale gardens in the Feywild, futuristic spaceships, and other wondrous locales.
This anthology weaves together six classic DUNGEONS & DRAGONS adventures while updating them for the game’s fifth edition. You can run these quests individually or as a campaign that takes characters from level 1 to level 13.
This book includes the following adventures:
- Beyond the Crystal Cave
- Expedition to the Barrier Peaks
- Pharaoh
- The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
- The Lost City
- When a Star Falls
Barrier Peaks is an iconic locale, but what about the other adventures?
The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is a classic “tournament module”, with a wilderness area and dungeon crawl built into it. WotC is including a scorecard for this one, and it’ll be interesting to revisit that style of play for 5th Edition. Players confront the vampiric daughter of Iggwilv, aka Tasha.
Beyond the Crystal Cave will be a treat for both new and old players. It’s one of the UK series, and is unlike most other modules of its time, because players are expected, and indeed, rewarded for solving encounters with nonviolent means. The fewer spoilers, the better with this one.
The Lost City is a Tom Moldvay of the Basic D&D set fame. And this is a rare gem indeed. It’s an adventure deliberately unfinished because it was designed for novice DMs to practice fleshing out adventure modules and making their own mark in the world. And that’s not something most modules today let you practice, or guide you through.
When a Star Falls is another module from TSR UK, and has adventurers dealing with the creatures of the underdark, as a star falls from the heavens and must be returned to its rightful place. But even the stars hold secrets of their own…
And finally, Pharaoh, an adventure from Tracy and Laura Hickman, of Dragonlance fame. In this adventure, players are exiled to the desert wastes (they know what they did) and are charged with exploring a sunken pyramid, only to learn that the cursed mummy inhabiting it wants the adventurers to succeed in taking the treasure from within, so they might, at last, be free.
