Furiosa takes us back to the wastelands, telling the story of the War Rig driver—and she’s bringing Immorten Joe with her.

In Fury Road, the powerful general of the warlords controls the most precious resource in the wasteland: water. Despite his total control of the aquifer, his body is diseased and dying. Immorten Joe is a grotesque figure who needs help to move and cannot breathe without a mask. With his health failing, he becomes desperate for a healthy heir. When his ‘wives’ escape, he sends his army of War Boys on an epic race across the wastes to retrieve them.

The rest is cinematic history.

Immorten Joe Returns in Furiosa

Hugh Keays-Byrne, who brought the iconic villain to life in Fury Road, passed in 2020.

It’s now been confirmed that Lachy Hulme will play Immorten Joe in the prequel. The Australian actor is a friend of George Miller and has appeared in Preacher and The Matrix Revolutions. He was initially cast as a member of warlord Dementus‘ (played by Chris Hemsworth) gang and was cast after filming had already begun. Hulme told Empire how he clinched the role after a discussion with the director.

“He said, ‘I’ll probably just get a body double. I said, ‘Well, somebody needs to step up for Hugh. Someone needs to honour this great man. I can do it. I can do the voice. And it’s all in the eyes.’ He said, ‘Do you want to do it?’ I said, ‘What took you so long? You’ve finally figured out that this movie ain’t gonna make dollar one until you’ve got double Lachy Hulme in it!’”

We won’t know if he will live up to Keays-Byrne until the movie releases, but he certainly looks fantastic.

Furiosa Cast & Details

The top cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Angus Sampson, Nathan Jones, and Daniel Webber. Director George Miller has reassembled the crew from Fury Road for this one—stunt coordinators Guy Norris and Tim Wong, director of photography Simon Duggan, sound designer Robert Mackenzie, plus costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt. Junkie XL is penning the score.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
