Steamforged Games and Kobold Press Will Make A ‘Tales of the Valiant’ Starter Set
Kobold Press and Steamforged Games announced a partnership on a new Starter Set for the Tales of the Valiant 5E Fantasy RPG.
Tales of the Valiant aka Project Black Flag is Kobold Press’ own take on D&D 5th Edition. Building from the now-in-Creative-Commons 5E SRD, Tales of the Valiant promises to deliver “a powerful new system, with teeth!” And if you’ve seen any of the previews, you know how crunchy and specific Kobold gets with character creation options and new mechanics. The core is the same, it’s 5th Edition and is “fully compatible with 5E”, which is a phrase all of us are going to hear more and more as we head further into 2024.
But. Tales of the Valiant is getting a swanky new Starter Set thanks to a collaboration with Steamforged Games. The new set will presumably release later this year, along with Tales of the Valiant.

Actual details of what will be in the Starter Set are sparse indeed. Here’s a look at the official announcement, which doesn’t reveal much, only that more is coming “very soon.”

Kobold Press, a prominent name in roleplaying for over 17 years and the leading creator of third-party Dungeons & Dragons content—that recently extended its legacy with the Black Flag Roleplaying rules and Tales of the Valiant roleplaying game—has joined forces with Steamforged Games, renowned for its Epic Encounters range and celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The partnership is built on a shared goal to further the growth and accessibility of tabletop roleplaying.”
Worth mentioning is the kinds of stuff that Steamforged Makes. In the press release, Mat Hart, Co-founder and Creative Director at Steamforged games said that they were excited to create “an incremental experience that will scaffold players through the levels until they’re competent, confident, and having an excellent time in the process.” Meanwhile, Wolfgang Baur, founder and CEO of Kobold Press mentioned wanting new players to “take their first steps into the hobby in a way that is easily accessible and fun” while also hyping up the “beautiful products” Steamforged Games releases.
And one need look no further than the Epic Encounters series, to see what kinds of things they tend to make. Richly detailed miniatures, stories and adventures that tie in to them specifically. They are absolutely worth it. And if Tales of the Valiant’s starter set is anything like that? Things are looking up for those hoisting the Black Flag.
