AoS: Light Must Have Darkness – Next Edition’s Possible “Big Bads”
There’s a new edition of Age of Sigmar right around the corner, and I think it’s high time for a new big threat to rear its ugly head – like these!
Welcome, Generals of the Realms! Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and honestly even that’s not an excuse), you know there’s a brand new AoS edition heading our way in May. While there have already been some divisive decisions, we still don’t know much about what this new edition will mean. However, we do know one thing: Sigmar sees a threat beyond anything he’s faced before.
We know that the Skaven are a big problem for the Realms right now, and they’ll be the primary antagonist of the new big box. However, we don’t know WHO is behind this attack. Are the Skaven acting on their own? Are they following the orders of a higher power? In the aftermath, will something even worse show up? There are quite a few characters that could pose a big threat to the forces of Order, and I have a few I’d love to see.
Thanquol
One of my all-time favorite characters from lore, Thanquol is a Skaven of incredible intelligence, prodigious magical skill, and no small amount of luck. If he’s pulling the strings behind the Skaven invasion, then the surface should tremble. He survived several assassination attempts, went toe-to-toe with Gotrek and survived, and even made it through the End Times relatively unscathed. While he was never a Nagash-level threat, the ascension of the Horned Rat could be just the boost he needs to become a worldwide menace.
Ikit Claw
Another prolific Skaven warlord and one with the technical know-how to build the massive machines we saw in the trailer, Ikit Claw could finally be seeing his due. The inventor of several of the Skaven’s most devious war machines, he is the master of engineers and a deadly foe in his own right. While he doesn’t have the pull of the Grey Seers like Thanquol, his inventions could set him apart from his fellows due to their necessity in the invasion. This could be Skryre’s time, and I’m here for it.
Mannfred von Carstein
One of the most prolific vampire lords in the Realms, Mannfred could easily rise above his station and become a threat in his own right. He’s already pulling away from Nagash’s influence, and while the Lord of Death still maintains dominion over Shyish, he has made the mistake of empowering his generals a bit too mightily. If any of them were to break his leash, it would be Mannfred, and he’s likely to take at least Ushoran with him. I shudder to think of the effects of a civil war in Shyish.
Teclis
I know this is a bit of a hot take, but hear me out. Teclis has always worked for what he believes is the greater good for his people. While he has been an ally of Sigmar since the founding of the Realms, he has also been a master manipulator, similar to Eldrad in 40k. If he decides that Sigmar is no longer fit to lead, he may turn the Lumineth against him, and try to take dominion over the forces of Order for himself. This is unlikely, given his intellect, but anything could happen.
Morathi
This one makes sense, since Morathi was already a villain in the Old World. She has proven herself to be self-serving, and even tore apart her alliances to ascend to godhood. If Morathi is up to her old tricks, she could use the Skaven threat to take more power for herself.
