Warhammer 40K: Combat Patrol Orks – Pricing Breakdown & Next Steps
So you’re looking to roll with the Green Tide and you’re eyeing the Combat Patrol: Orks box? Got a plan for where to go next?
The Orks have a brand new codex and an updated Combat Patrol box, too. It’s clocking in at $160 and packs quite a punch. We’re going to take a look at the price and also talk about where you can go from there. It’s time to get your WAAAGH!!! on.
Combat Patrol: Orks – Breakdown
Contents:
1x Beastboss ($40)
4x Squighog Boyz, accompanied by 1x Bomb Squig ($65)
20x Beast Snagga Boyz ($120)
Total Individual MSRP: $225
Total Savings: $65
It’s hard to argue that the Combat Patrol isn’t saving you money on these models. Should you buy two of them? Well, that’s when you start hitting those pesky diminishing returns. Do you really need a second Beastboss? Debatable. Either way, we’re going to assume you’re getting at least one copy so you can kick off a Beast Boyz Waaagh!
The next purchase for you? Well, if you haven’t snagged a new Codex: Orks, you’re going to want to start there for sure. This has additional rules and Detachments you can use for your new army. Plus, it’s got more stuff than the Index…which you could still use…but it’s just less stuff and will probably get overridden by the Codex anyhow. As for points, we’re still using the Munitorum Field Manual for now. It’s free but will likely get an update as the new Ork codex hits shelves (or shortly after).
Point-wise, the army in the Combat Patrol is clocking in at:
- Beast Snagga Boyz (20) – 210 points
- Beastboss – 100 points
- Nob on Smasha Squig – 60 points
- Squighog boys (3) – 125
Point Total: 495
Next Steps With The Beast Snagga Boyz
So where do you go from here? I’m going to assume you missed out on the fantastic Ork Battleforce box because that sold out way to quick. That said, you kind of need to make a decision here: Do you dabble with regular Ork boyz or do you stick with this Combat Patrol theme and lean into the Beast Snagga Boyz? Personally, if I were starting over with Orks, I’d likely just go with regular boyz…but since this Combat Patrol is pushing us towards Beast Snaggas, let’s go all in with them!
I don’t think you can be a respectable Beast Snagga Waaagh! without a Kill Rig. You could opt for a Hunta Rig instead. Both are based on the same kit. And look at that Squig! I mean, c’mon! That’s another 170 points right there, too. You know what? Why not get one of each. That’s a lot of beef on the tabletop and they will be distracting for your opponent to deal with. A Hunta Rig is 150 more points, too.
Right now, we’re up to 815 points. And we have another decision to make. I feel like we need some more Beast Snagga Boyz but I also think we could use some Squighog Boyz, too. So let’s double up on both! 20 more Boyz, and 3 more Squighog Boyz with their accompanying Nob on Smasha Squig. That will bring us up to 1210 points!
At this point, I feel like dabbling in a special character with Mozrog Skragbad is appropriate. He’s another 195 points of big, bad greenskin and he’s on theme. We’re sitting at 1405 points so we’ve got a short way to go to get to 2000. I do feel like we’ve got a solid theme here and lots of boyz and squig beef. But I’m kind of at a loss here. Do we just add more boyz and squigs? Or do we open up our theme a bit? It kind of depends on which Detachment you’re leaning into as well. I could see adding in a couple Trukks at 65 each to help ferry boyz around. I could even see just going with more foot slogging Beast Snagga Boyz as that would fit the theme, too.
Personally, I’d probably break the theme here and go with some more faster options to round things out from a tactical perspective. A Dakkajet could be randomly effective here. Or I’d go the opposite route and load-up on heavy armor. A Morka/Gorka-naut might work just fine! And don’t forget about a Weirdboy or two…
I’m going to leave the last 500ish points up to you. Put your own spin on things. This would be an excellent foundation to build off from. Plus, at any point during our little planning process you can break off and do your own thing, too. That’s the beauty of these little thought experiments! At the end of the day, build the WAAAGH!!! you want to play and you’ll have more fun doing it.
If I were really starting orks, I’d start with Ghaz and go from there…
