Warhammer 40K: New T’au Combat Patrol ‘Sudden Dawn Cadre’ Revealed
Games Workshop is updating the T’au Combat Patrol box with a mix of different options. Time to hitch a ride!
There’s a new T’au Codex and along with that is a new Combat Patrol waiting in the wings. Say hello to the new Combat Patrol known as the Sudden Dawn Cadre.
“While T’au Empire armies generally prefer to fight at extreme range where their firepower and manoeuvrability keeps fragile troops safe, they are no less dangerous when combat devolves into a close-range firefight around key objectives.”
T’au Combat Patrol – Sudden Dawn Cadre
From the image above we can tell what’s coming in the set:
- 1x T’au Empire Commander
- 10x Fire Warrior Breachers
- 10x Pathfinders
- 1x Devilfish Transport
Oh and if you count up all the drones there’s four total also included as part of other kits. Now, I won’t get into all the tactical details that GW goes into for this new Combat Patrol. But I’ll give you a quick summary:
Get your breachers up close with the Devilfish and let them blast away at short range. The Pathfinders will probably want to split into two groups so they can each lay down fire with rail rifles. The commander does commander things and gets to shoot while in close combat because of the vehicle keyword.
They also show off an enhancement and stratagem for the Combat Patrol as well:
To be fair, yeah, this is a nice little package and the game plan for the T’au could work. You just have to remember to play to your objectives as well. The downsides I see are that the T’au are really relying on that first strike to do all the work. If the enemy happens to survive that volley of close range shooting your troops are going to be in charge range. And every T’au player knows that’s exactly where you don’t want to be.
Having said all that, I do think this is actually a really solid start to a T’au army overall. You’ve got your core troop options, a transport, and a commander to build the rest of your army around. Nothing bad about any of that. Plus, you’re not locked into one build either. It’s a solid core to expand from — that’s what I’d want in a Combat Patrol box.
