Age of Sigmar: Abraxia’s Varanspear Up Close
Archaon’s new Lieutenant is coming soon and she’s got a really mean spear and a fancy model to match. We’ve got an up close look at Abraxia!
By now you’ve probably seen Abraxia and her Varanspear rules. She’s kind of a monster in combat — as she should be! You don’t get to lead the charge of the elite Varanguard by being a weakling. But we’re not here to look at her rules. Today, we’ve got the miniature in hand direct from Games Workshop. I got the pleasure of assembling this one and Abraxia does not disappoint!
Abraxia, Spear of the Everchosen
First up, she’s on a round base not an oval. I wanted to clear that up because if you’ve only seen the official GW pictures of the miniature you might have missed that bit. Abraxia is a slightly larger version of the Chaos Lord on Karkadrak …if the base was round and the Chaos Lord was a a member of the Varanguard.
Assembly-wise she was fairly straightforward to construct. Abraxia didn’t have any super-crazy cuts that required delicate maneuvering. If you can build a Varanguard (of which there are three of them in the box) you can assemble her just fine. As always, follow the instructions and you’ll be fine. I used some plastic glue to fuse everything together as well.
Personally, I really loved all the details of this miniature. In particular the scales on her cloak and her mount. They make me wonder if she killed this creature’s mother to wear as a cape. But then did the most chaos thing ever and raised one of her own young as her mount. Or maybe it’s from an unfortunate Seraphon creature that uh, “donated” to her cause. There’s also a ton of stuff about her miniature that ties her in with the Varanguard. I opted for the version with a helmet but you can go bear headed as well. I just think it looks way more imposing with all that armor if the rider’s face is also covered, too.
It’s a great pose and a really cool miniature overall. I kind of wish there was something going on with the other side of the base…but that’s just room to do some cool terrain/ruins of your own. Maybe a fallen enemy or two? There’s some modeling/hobby options to be had there with the open space. Aside from that, I think she makes an outstanding leader miniature if you’re running a Varanguard-themed army. Which I am. So…I feel like she was tailor made for me. Abraxia isn’t, but if you’re running Varanguard there’s little reason not to bring her. Too bad her rules have come out at the end of this edition and not when the rest of the Slave to Darkness army got rules. That would have been a completely different ball game.
Abraxia’s Varanspear is out this weekend for Pre-order. It’s a potent package for the Slaves to Darkness army but it’s even better if you’re running her with as many Varanguard as you can cram in a list.
