D&D: The Alternate Art Cover of the 5.5E Player’s Handbook Looks Real Cozy
WotC has unveiled the cozy new alternate art cover of the upcoming 5.5E Player’s Handbook. It’s very much a whole vibe.
D&D has revealed a look at the upcoming alternate art cover for the Player’s Handbook 2024 edition. This is the special collector’s edition cover that you’ll be able to snag at your FLGS as early as September 3rd, so keep your eye out if you’re looking to get in the second this hits store shelves. The rest of the release comes out September 17th.
But, the new art sets a whole different vibe. It is, as the headline says, extremely cozy. A bunch of adventurers still out on an adventure, but in some of the quiet moments. It’s also extremely beautiful. Let’s take a look.
D&D 5.5E Player’s Handbook Invites You to Tea with a Dragon
The image comes via Polygon, who talked in more detail about the artwork with WotC’s head of art, Josh Herman:
We liked the idea of making the alt cover something that has a sweeter, calmer version of that. Something that’s not so aggressive, [with] combat [and] fighting right away. That’s certainly a […] huge pillar of D&D, but sometimes a lot of what D&D is, is just storytelling.”
“Just storytelling” is a fitting moment for the scene. A group of adventurers comprising the archetypal adventuring party, Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, Wizard, kick back and relax, enjoying some tea with a Gold Dragon. This cozier art comes from Wylie Beckert, whose work you might recognize from the collector’s cover of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
Beckert’s style certainly complements the full cover treatment, which is decorated with a gold filigree border from Simenn Meyer, who did the alternate covers for Candlekeep Mysteries and Keys from the Golden Vault.
This book is going to look so good on shelves. Here’s hoping we get more of a look inside before too long!
