MTG Commanders come in all shapes and sizes, but these five Ooze generals come in EVERY shape and size at the same time.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.

Oozes have been a staple of fantasy gaming for a long time. From the humble but deadly Gelatinous Cube to the horrifying Oblex, they have been the bane of adventurers since adventuring began. In the Magic multiverse, these Oozes sometimes gain sentience and lead Ooze armies of their own. Whether or not they’re truly sentient or just slightly more focused isn’t obvious. Either way, if you want a hilarious but still threatening Commander, one of these five might be the ticket.

What is Commander?

For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is an excellent source for Commander info and can give you ideas on how to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.

Aeve, Progenitor Ooze

Green and Storm are not words you hear together often in Magic. Usually, Storm is the purview of Blue and Red spellslinging decks. However, Aeve is here to change all that. He feeds on the energy of the spells you cast, replicating himself the more you put out. As each copy enters, it grows in size. By the time you get to Aeve, you could potentially have a game-winning Commander. But even if you don’t, you have a slimy army ready to slowly consume your opponent’s board.

The Mimeoplasm

A classic Commander, the Mimeoplasm is all about what you’ve already lost. When he hits the battlefield, he eats two of your creatures, becoming a copy of one with a power boost from the other. Ever wanted an Old Gnawbone with a Doomgape’s power boost? Now you’ve got it. Just make sure you pack your deck with discard pieces so you’ll have plenty of food for this oozey menace.

Umori, the Collector

One of the Companions of old, Umori, is a perfectly good Commander in its own right. If your deck is full of the same type of card (like a Slime Against Humanity, for example), then you get a discount on casting. Going all creature Ooze is the easy path, of course, but with the new Ooze sorcery from MKM, you could play a deck that no one expects and surprise them with token spam.

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan/Slurrk, All-Ingesting

This Golgari duo will give your creatures a boost and keep boosting. As long as your creatures have counters on them, even death won’t stop them from buffing your board. Unleash an army of modified creatures and then keep coming back for more.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Another classic Commander, though not an Ooze, Muldrotha is still an amazing Ooze leader. Since Oozes care so much about your graveyard, it will almost always be full. Muldrotha lets you dig out the best bits and bring them back, potentially just to dump them again.
