Pathfinder’s ‘Prey For Death’ Wants YOU To Be an Assassin
In the upcoming Prey for Death adventure, which helps usher in the War of the Immortals, your party will join the elite Red Mantis Assassins.
Assassins are all too often the villains of an adventure. I mean, it’s not hard to picture it, right? Saving the king from assassins is a trope as old as history. But, sometimes assassins can be heroic. Just as kings can be tyrannical. All it takes is to have a guild of some kind. A code. Or maybe a creed, and suddenly heroic assassins abound everywhere.
And in Pathfinder, no assassins are more renowned or feared than the Red Mantis assassins. They wield serrated blades, wear black and red armor, and of course, their namesake red mantis masks that grant them magical sight in addition to hiding their identity.
An upcoming adventure, expected out in July, will have players join the notorious assassins, becoming one of the elite. But what will challenge them?
Pathfinder 2E: Prey for Death – Coming Soon
In Paizo’s description, we get an idea of the sort of adventure that might demand the Red Mantis:
The infamous Red Mantis assassins are feared throughout the world for their ruthlessness and legacy—those they slay stay dead! Yet they are not without honor, so when a group of assassins sent on a dangerous mission are met with unexpected treachery, they must clear their own names while remaining true to their murderous calling, even as greater plots and shocking truths reveal themselves.
Prey for Death is a deluxe hardcover Pathfinder Second Edition adventure for 14th level characters, and gives players the chance to play members of the world’s most notorious assassin’s guild. The adventure also includes new items, lore, and character backgrounds, as well as a several powerful monsters ready to threaten high level characters!
Two things leap out. For one, unexpected treachery. It’s hard to make assassins feel like they have to clear their own names. And yet, that’s exactly what this promises. For two, this adventure takes place at 14th level.
And Red Mantis assassins, at 14th level, can clean up pretty soundly. What’s interesting is that this is a standalone adventure. It’s not a part of an ongoing adventure path. It’s just a brief dalliance in the world of the Red Mantis, and may be a great way to show players in your ongoing campaign what the Red Mantis are up to while their characters are off looting, well, whatever it is they loot.
Prey for Death is due out “mid-July” so keep an eye (or insectoid mask eyeslit) out for more as we get closer.
