Games Workshop has released a new video faction focus for the Chaos Space Marines and it’s the perfect introduction to dabble in heresy.

If you’re looking to learn a bit more about the Chaos Space Marines then there’s a new video from GW showcasing them. It’s a pretty slick introduction and it’s pretty high-level stuff. That makes it perfect to share with newer players or friends that might be interested in playing “the bad guys.” But really it’s a recruitment tool for Chaos. So does that make me a chaos accomplice? You know…let’s not think about that and definitely don’t tell the local Inquisitor.

Warhammer Community also put together a nice little primer on how to get started with Chaos Space Marines. I’m not going to go over all that as you can read it for yourself. That said, they now have a new Codex so I wanted to touch on where to get started with them. So if you are completely new to Chaos Space Marines, you’ll likely want to start with the Codex and the Combat Patrol.

Combat Patrol Chaos Space Marines

Combat Patrol: Chaos Space Marines Contents:

  • 1x Master of Possession
  • 5x Possessed
  • 10x Chaos Space Marines
  • 10x Chaos Cultists
  • 2x Chaos Space Marines transfer sheets

Now, I’ve already done a pricing breakdown for this box. It’s actually a good mix of units from the Chaos Space Marine roster. It dabbles in the classic Legionaries, mutated Possessed, the meat-shield cultists, and it’s all led by a Master of Possession. Honestly, it’s not my favorite spread of units but that’s because I prefer Power Armor or better in my Chaos Space Marines. I also personally tend to avoid Possessed and Possessed-adjacent units — but that’s just a personal preference. If you’re brand new and still trying to sort out what flavor you like then this is actually a good spread. Think of it like a combo-pack or tasting flight of Chaos units.

Additionally, their Combat Patrol Datasheets are out and freely available from Games Workshop, too. So if you are curious about Chaos, read up on Zarkan’s Daemonkin and see if it intrigues you.

Next Steps (Into Heresy)

Again, if you’re completely new to Warhammer 40,000 and looking for a starting point for Chaos Space Marines, buy the codex first. From there, you’re next step is likely the Combat Patrol. Get a feel for the army with a few games of Combat Patrol under your belt. Those games are fast and smaller in terms of points-scale and table size — perfect for learning the ropes. After you’ve got a few games under your belt and you’re getting a feel for what you like about the army lean into that.

Do you like sending waves of cultists into the fray to slow the enemy and take objectives? Maybe get more cultists and check out the Dark Apostle and the Dark Commune. Perhaps you liked the Master of Possession and how he interacted with the Possessed. Good news, there’s more daemon-possessed options to mess with. Check out Obliterators as an example. Or maybe you’re like me and really want that sweet, sweet Power Armor save. There’s loads of more elite options to work with. Chosen, Havocs, and Terminators all come to mind. And we haven’t even touched on vehicles and Daemon-engines yet.

The point is that Chaos Space Marines have a very wide array of options. They are one of the larger ranges in the game. And if you really want to stretch that, you could even look at allying in some of those more…specialized cult troops. But that’s a whole new ball of wax. For now, if you new and want to play Chaos Space Marines, you’ve got a long (war) road ahead of you. It’s always a solid faction in every edition. So chose your heresy and hang with those traitors! It’s a fun time.

What recommendations would you give to a friend just starting Chaos Space Marine? And remember: Don’t tell the Inquisitor.
