Games Workshop has announced a new version of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App coming. Here’s what to expect.

The community was collectively bummed with the announcement of the shuttering of the Warscroll Army List Builder on the Warhammer Community site. But it was mentioned that GW has a new option moving forward. Today, we’re getting more details about that option. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App is going to attempt to fill those shoes.

“With the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar on the way, it’s time to unveil the details of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App. Arriving shortly after the launch of the new edition, the app is designed to help you quickly create army lists and make it easier than ever to look up the rules you need while playing.”

The important part here is that the app is going to be up for download on July 15th, 2024. There are a few more things that need to be mentioned as well. Let’s start with the basics.

What’s in The App?

“The rules reference section covers everything you need to play: Core Rules, Advanced Rules, all of the free Faction Packs with Battle Traits, Battle Formation, Heroic Traits, Artefacts, Spell, Prayer and Manifestation Lores, and warscrolls. The app also contains each faction’s Spearhead rules and the Spearhead Fire and Jade Battlepack, though you’ll still need the board, cards, and terrain to play.”

Additionally, the App also has the following rules, too:

  • Legends
  • Warscrolls for Warcry and Underworlds miniatures
  • Regiments of Renown
  • Armies of Renown

When the General’s Handbook for the 2024-25 season is released, those rules will also be made free in the app. That includes seasonal rules and battleplans.

And, like the current iteration of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App, you’ll be able to input a code from your Battletomes (when they release) to unlock those rules for the app. So at least that’s the exact same as the current app.

Changes to army composition in the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar are supported by the updated Storm Forge army planner. Selecting a hero for a regiment will give you a pre-filtered list of eligible units to add so you won’t need to cross-reference other information, and all of the Regiments of Renown can be added with a single click – no need to memorise them all.”

So…What’s New?

To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure. This all sounds like what the current version of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The App had already. Obviously, there’s been new updates planned to roll out so that this all works correctly with the new edition. The Spearhead additions are good as well. Basically, if you’ve already got The App on your phone then you’ll probably just need to update it when it becomes available on July 15th, 2024.

To get the full use out of The App, you’ll probably need to register a Warhammer+ account. I’m hoping that just setting one up is good enough so you can access The App features. That’s how it works currently at least. Even if you don’t have a subscription you can redeem the code in your Battletome to unlock that content. Again, that’s how it works currently. I’m not 100% sure it’s going to be the same moving forward (but I hope it is).

There’s also some mixed news about the app. I’m screenshotting this for posterity:

For the first few weeks The App will be free. After that, it seems like for unlimited list building you’ll need a Warhammer+ subscription. “Some features will continue to be available for free” — what’s implied there is that some features won’t be free, however.

Finally, the text below the line does make it seem like there’s going to be a new version of this app available to download. Confusingly, it will be alongside the previous version. So just make sure you get the correct one I guess.

Get The App…I Guess?

You can bet when the new/updated app comes out I’ll be poking at it to figure out how it works. I get the feeling I won’t be the only one either. I’m not going sugar coat this though: it stinks there’s not a Warscroll Builder for the new edition. That was a super easy way to build an electronic version/PDF of your list so you could send it to your opponents or to submit it for a tournament. Hopefully there’s a good export feature for the new version coming with the launch. Otherwise, it’s time to bust out some old school friends:
