Fabula Ultima’s ‘Atlas: Techno Fantasy’ Has Some Real ‘Chained Echoes’ Vibes
A new sourcebook for Fabula Ultima, the TTJRPG, brings the Chained Echoes/Xenosaga vibes in Atlas: Techno Fantasy.
Fabula Ultima is a fantastic tabletop roleplaying game that pays homage to classic JRPGs. Games like your Finals Fantasy or Dragons Quest use some inappropriate internal pluralization, or Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana use titles a little more properly. These games all influence Fabula Ultima, but a new book, Fabula Ultima Atlas: Techno Fantasy, pulls on my favorite trope of JRPGs, which is the blend of fantasy elements and technology of various kinds.
Whether magitek suits of mecha armor in FFVI or just straight-up robots and lasers in Chrono Trigger, or all of the future chapters in Secret of Evermore, there’s something pretty spectacular about blending some techno into the fantasy, as Fabula Ultima team calls it.
Their latest book evokes games like Chained Echoes and Xenosaga with its focus on high-tech gear and dystopian worlds full of outcast heroes. My mouth is watering already; let’s take a look.
Fabula Ultima Atlas: Techno Fantasy – Robots and Ultimate Weapons Await
Of particular interest for Fabula Ultima Players are the 3 new classes, the Esper, the Mutant, and the Pilot, who come accompanied by new Heroic Skills that create all sorts of new options for players whether you’re using the high-tech stuff or not.
But you’ll also find rules for creating your own customized “high-tech ultimate weapons” with a new ruleset, as well as a system of Quirks to add more depth to your character, and something called “technospheres,” which will let you combine Class Skills to make your own combos.
On top of all of that, there’s plenty of stuff for GMs as well:
- 10 techno fantasy locations: archetypal settings with tips and hints for playing an intense techno fantasy campaign or which you can use as inspiration to breathe life into your world.
- 5 Villains, challenging new bosses of increasing power to use in your adventures, providing your Players with tough and exciting challenges.
- 216 full-color pages, featuring manga and chibi-style illustrations from international artists.
All of this awaits in Fabula Ultima Atlas: Techno Fantasy!
