It looks like this one piece of cloth has seen better days. What in the world is this Rumor Engine from Games Workshop teasing?

Welcome to another majestic Tuesday and a brand new Rumor Engine from Games Workshop. Today’s entry is another one of those “I know what that is, but I don’t know what that is” types of entries. Don’t know what I mean? Well, see it for yourself:

Warhammer Community gives us a hint…

“There’s no guarantee that this actually is a cloak, mind you. It’s probably cloth, and probably belongs to someone who’s not big on positive first impressions (or darning), but it could really be any kind of garment. Or a banner. Or a sail, or an awning, or curtains…”

See what I mean now? You probably see that and say, “Yep, that’s a cloak…or piece of cloth. It could be a lot of things…” That’s just one issue with it. But that’s just the first layer. The next layer down is the realization of just how many things in Warhammer wear: cloaks, robes, hoods, flags, garments made of cloth, or really anything that’s not organic or metal. That list is vast and varied. One clue we DO have is that it’s at least torn and messy. So that does narrow things down a tad.

It’s probably not a Space Marine, as they tend to keep their clothes in pretty good shape; there is not a lot of pre-sculpted battle damage on your typical Marines. We can also cross off Aeldari for a similar reason. The Adeptus Mechanicus also tends to take pretty good care of their clothes, and I don’t think the Knights would leave their households without patching any banners and such. I also don’t think it’s Custodes or Sororitas either.

Custodes wear cloth — but they wouldn’t be caught dead with battle damage!

As far as Chaos, well, you could check a lot of boxes there. So we’re just going to skip them and look at the rest of the Xenos armies. Tyranids are in the clear, and so are the T’au, as they tend to keep their clothing pristine, too. I’m not too sure about the Leagues of Votann as they do have cloth but we haven’t seen any real battle damage on them. The Necrons have shifted away from cloth (for the most part) although I do wonder if the Flayed Ones count. But everyone else has some examples of torn-up and/or frayed clothing/battle damage.

And we haven’t even touched on the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar stuff yet.

Nighthaunt came to mind at first. They certainly aren’t the last.

I think you get my point on this one, though. Loads of armies across all of Warhammer wear cloth. And while we can narrow it down to “armies with battle damage clothes and cloth,” there are still too many to really pinpoint what this could be. Plus, we still don’t know if that’s actually cloth. What if it’s a leather apron or something far worse?

Flayed Skin isn’t off the options list here, either…

If you’ve got any ideas or theories, share them with us in the comments. This one’s a doozy!
