The classic board game is back from Games Workshop with a new edition inbound. Get ready for Talisman 5th Edition!

It seems like Games Workshop is just rolling out the new editions for everything this year. Talisman is back with a new 5th edition coming out July 1, 2024. And the first 5th edition expansion will be out later this year, too! But let’s get into all the details.

via Warhammer Community

“Games Workshop isn’t just about Warhammer, you know. We’ve made some absolutely banging board games over the years – including the likes of Fury of Dracula, and Warrior Knights. Talisman is another classic, a game that’s been around for more than 40 years across numerous editions – and which is, for fans of a certain vintage, a glittering shard of pure nostalgia.”

Talisman 5th Edition

So what’s new in this edition? It’s the same gameplay you remember. Two to six players are competing to traverse the land and gain power in hope to become powerful enough to claim the Crown of Command. For the new edition there’s new art and some “smart refinements” to the gameplay to make it a smoother experience.

“The 5th Edition of Talisman: The Magical Quest Board Game is produced by Avalon Hill and is currently available to pre-order. It contains 12 classic characters, 100 Adventure cards, 24 spells, and all the other accoutrements you expect – including those iconic coloured cones to demonstrate stat improvements. The new art is gorgeous, and the refinements to the rules are clearly picked out.”

Talisman Expansion?

Oh hey, remember above when we mentioned an expansion was coming later this year? Well say hello to Talisman Alliances: Fate Beckons.

Talisman is no stranger to expansions. The classic game had a TON of cool extras that really (and literally) expanded the board game. But Fate Beckons is adding something never before seen in Talisman: Co-operative game play.

“You’ll work together with your fellow players to overcome unique challenges called Trials. Instead of claiming the Crown of Command for yourself, you’ll join forces to bury Talismans in the Places of Power, unseal the Portal of Power, and defeat the adversary of each Trial. Overcome all five to complete the game and win together. This is a ‘legacy’ format – you’ll play five linked games, and as you complete each Trial, you’ll open envelopes and boxes to discover mystery cards and new figures to add to your next game.”

Okay…I’m interested for real now. My issue with a lot of legacy games is that 1) you’ve changed the base game so much that it’s unrecognizable/unplayable and 2) it can be hard to reset and go again with a new group. This expansion seems like it fixes at least one of those issues for me. Because it’s not going to change the “core” experience/base game you can just play that mode again with a quick reset.  It also pushes you to play with your friends in a co-op mode to actually finish this campaign. I can get behind those changes!

With the new edition on the way and a new way to play with the expansion later this year I did not have “get excited about Talisman” on my bingo card for 2024. It’s nice to be surprised!

A whole new way to play in a new edition? I guess it’s time for some Talisman!
