Playing these five MTG legends can be a lot of fun, but you’ll want to make sure your opponent isn’t a short plumber in overalls.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.

Fungi are some of the most numerous organisms in the world. If you believe everything that’s come out recently, they are even more multitudinous than insects and have memory. They have even been the villains of several franchises, from video games to films. In the Magic Multiverse, Fungus takes a step further, and they become actual sentient creatures. In fact, Fungus creatures have played a huge part in several plots across Magic’s history. With these five Commanders, you can run a deck of powerful mushroom warriors and leave your opponents moldy.

What is Commander?

For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is an excellent source for Commander info and can give you ideas on how to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Our first Fungus is one of the main antagonists of the newest Ixalan set, and he is truly the Master of Mushrooms. He can get absolutely massive, and with trample thrown in, he makes for a nasty Commander. Best of all, he comes loaded with his own army of Fungi, so long as you’re ok with pitching your own permenants. But then, all things rot, and from the rot comes life.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

One of my favorite (and most meme-worthy) Commanders, Slimefoot is a bit less aggro than his fellow from Ixalan. He does, however, get very angry when his smaller brethren die. If you pack this deck full of Saproling makers and find some way to sacrifice them, you can take out your opponent without throwing a single punch.

Thelon of Havenwood

Thelon is an interesting addition to this list. He isn’t a Fungus himself, but he loves to make them stronger. You’ll want to add a lot of proliferating abilities since you have to exile a Fungus to get the spore counters you desperately need. With proliferate, you’ll only need to do it a few times to get the full power of Thelon’s ability.

Ghave, Guru of Spores

Ghave is a fun Commander, and another that benefits from proliferate. He can make tokens by sacrificing +1/+1 counters and vice versa, so you’ll want to keep the counters rolling so you can make tons of Saprolings. Best of all, none of his abilities are tap abilities, so if you have an ability that triggers off creature death and enough mana, you can take out your opponents by sacrificing and remaking a Saproling over and over.

Xavier Sal, Infested Captain

Similar to Ghave, Xavier can give you counters for a creature or a creature for a counter. However, Xavier is a little better because he doesn’t just add a counter; he proliferates. Get a few tokens out and go nuts.
