MTG: That’s No Bull – Top Minotaur Commanders

You’ll definitely have an a-Maze-ing time playing MTG with these three bovine Commanders. Your opponents? Not so much.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.

Minotaurs have been a part of myth and folklore since ancient times. Whether they were the horrifying monster that lived in the center of the Labyrinth of Crete or warriors from the steppes of Dominaria, these bovine brawlers have dipped their hooves into almost every corner of fantasy culture.

As a creature type, you can expect Red or Black creatures ready to trample over your enemy and leave their creatures buried by the stampede. To tame these wild beasts takes a Commander of extraordinary skill. Thankfully, these three just want to unleash them.

What is Commander?

For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. Sethron, Hurloon General

Sethron is the perfect start for our Minotaur feature, and everything you need for an aggressive Rakdos stomp fest. Whenever a nontoken Minotaur, including the man himself, enters the battlefield, you get another 2/3 Minotaur. That alone would make Sethron far exceed his cost, but then you can give your entire field a buff, evasion, and haste. This is as simple as they come strategy-wise: pack your deck with impactful Minotaurs and a doubler like Fiery Emancipation or Dictate of the Twin Gods (which features a Minotaur) and leave a hoofprint in your opponent’s battleline.

Neheb, the Worthy

Neheb did not have an easy life…or unlife for that matter. However, as a Commander, he’s hard to top when it comes to his fellow Minotaurs. He gives all your beastie boys first strike, and the less cards you have, the stronger they get. This is another “apply Minotaurs to enemy face” Commander, but he’s less about a horde and more about a few choice killers.

Mogis, God of Slaughter

While not technically a Minotaur, Mogis is still a perfect general for them. He gets blockers out of your way or makes your opponent pay with blood. After all, once Mogis raises his horned head, he could make Khorne himself blush.
