Games Workshop has announced three new starter sets for the new edition of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Which is the right one for you?

Not to be confused with the Skaventide Launch box, Games Workshop is introducing new starter sets for Age of Sigmar. As may know, Skaventide is a limited run launch box. So, for new players wanting to jump into the game GW is repeating the same strategy they used from the previous edition. They have three new boxed sets that will be available for stores and stockists to carry moving forward.

“For those looking to take their first steps into the game as a new player, or others who need somewhere to start as a returning general, there are three new Warhammer Age of Sigmar starter sets coming soon, each designed to get you started at a level you’re comfortable with. All three are great for introducing new players to the game, so if you’re a hobbyist trying to get your friends to join in, this is where you should start. “

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Introductory Set

First up we have the Introductory Set. This set has a unit of five Stormcast Eternal Liberators and 20 Skaven Clanrats. Everything in the box is push-fit miniatures as well. Additionally, this set also has six paints as well as a brush, too. It also has a 48-page softback handbook, six dice, a range ruler and play mat. It’s basically everything you’d need for an introduction to the game.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Starter Set

This is the Starter Set and it’s perfect for two players to really get into the game. It’s got two playable force with the Stormcast Eternals facing off against the Skaven again. It’s also got two range finders, 10 dice, a double sided gaming mat, and two rules references sheets. If you and a buddy were looking to split a box and play or if you just wanted two good starting forces this is a great option to pick-up.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Ultimate Starter Set

“The Ultimate Starter set contains all the key components for jumping into the thrilling new Spearhead game mode for Warhammer Age of Sigmar. This is a fast, fun, and richly tactical experience that captures the magic of the full game in bouts that you can wrap up over lunch. This box contains two full forces, a double-sided gaming mat with printed objectives, 10 dice, a frame of plastic terrain including 3” and 6” plastic range rulers, two decks of Battle Tactic cards, and two Twist decks themed to each board side – so it’s also a brilliant way to make a start on two mighty new armies.”

This set is everything in the Starter Set and then some. Personally, if I were going to get one of the starter sets I’d probably just spring for the Ultimate Starter Set. Mostly because this one has the Fire & Jade book for Spearhead and both of the armies included are Spearhead armies already. If you’re new or just getting started Spearhead seems like the best way to start playing and learning the game. So this box is likely going to be the best option to do just that.

Which Set Is For You?

This really depends on how interested you are and where you’re starting at. If you’ve got no hobby experience and no paints, I’d go with the Introductory set. That will at least introduce you to the world of Age of Sigmar and get you some (very) basic tools to get going. If you’ve already got hobby tools and some experience the Starter or the Ultimate sets might be more in your ballpark.

I think it’s going to come down to two things: Price and availability. If you’re looking to dive all the way in and it fits your budget the Ultimate Edition is a better option than the starter in my opinion. But that’s mostly because of the Spearhead items included.

You could purchase the Starter Set, dabble a bit, and the opt to get Fire & Jade later. Or you might want to skip Spearhead altogether and just start playing the “Advanced” rules and dive right into Matched Play. You do you!

If you’ve already got an army and it’s not Stormcast Eternals or Skaven (and you don’t want to start either) then honestly, you could skip the starter sets and just get the GHB 2024-25 book and you’re set. There’s really no wrong way to go about this one.
