We’ve got the miniatures from the next Warcry boxed set Briar and Bone built. These look wild with a new spin on classics from the range.

Briar and Bone is hitting shelves this weekend from Games Workshop. It’s taking another step in to this season of Warcry with the new boxed set. There’s something funky going on with these miniatures as they are have some fairly twisted backstories. The Teratic Cohort is constructed of Ossiarch Bonereapers who failed Nagash — so they were remade and sent to the Ravening Ruin to stand guard. On the other side stand the Twistweald. These Sylvaneth warriors have been infected with arcane fungal parasites. They still feel bound to protect the Gnarlwood but know they can never return. If their infection spread to other Sylvaneth it could be ruinous.

Needless to say both of these Warbands opened up some very interesting modeling opportunities for Games Workshop. And their sculptors did not disappoint! Let’s take a closer look at these new miniatures for Warcry.

The Teratic Cohort

The Teratic Cohort consists of a Kavalos Centari. This former Liege-Kavalos failed Nagash and was remade to guard the Gnarlwood. He is supported by a pair Mortek Cykloptians. Next up are the Teratic Prowlers. These hunting hounds were former Mortek soldiers once again remade to serve the will of Nagash. And finally there are the flying Aviarch Harpies. Long-range scouts and the eyes for this Warband on patrol.

Overall I like the ideas this warband brings to the lore. It’s almost like the Ossarich Bonereapers started off as basic bone constructs and have started to experiment. These new forms might be borne of failures but they could lead to improvements and advancements for the Ossiarch Bonereapers as a fighting force overall. Then again, I don’t know how creative the Soul Masons and Boneshapers are allowed to be…

The Twistweald

The Twistweald are led by Swarmsages. Their spiteswarm colonies attack and prune the parasitic growths of their followers and help to keep them functioning. The Twistroot Wardens are there to help guide the Twistwood Revenants and Twistwood Dryads in battle. Finally, there are the Twistwood Spite-Revenants with their deadly briars lashing out from them.

I like the idea of the Twistweald as these corrupted defenders. They can’t go back to Alarielle or they might infect other groves of Sylvaneth along the way. For now, they’ve had to make due with their infection and it’s changed them. It’s really a twist on the current Sylvaneth range and I like the direction GW is taking them.

That said, I’m still a little fuzzy on the lore for this pairing. Personally, it seems like both of these Warbands have similar goals. The Nagash doesn’t want the Realmshaper Engine’s influence out of the Gnarlwood. And the Twistweald don’t want to let anyone leave. It seems like they are kinda working the same goal from two different ends. But I suppose that’s life and death for ya…
