AoS: Nighthaunt Put the Death in Undeath
GW has released the latest Faction packs for Age of Sigmar 4.0. We’ve got the lowdown on the biggest changes for the ghosts with the most, the Nighthaunt.
Welcome in, Generals of the Realms! Skaventide is out, the battle lines have been drawn, and we are firmly in the 4.0 season. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been chomping at the bit to see how your favorite faction fared in the update. Some are amazing, some are terrible, and most are a little bit of both. Whatever faction you play, there’s definitely been a massive shakeup in how you’re going to play.
The Nighthaunt are a truly incredible army. From their lore to their models, everything about this ghostly horde is stunning. In fact, it was their design that first enticed me back into Age of Sigmar. For as long as I can remember, they’ve had the rules to back up their look as well. However, even with powerful rules, there always seemed to be a hard check for them.
AoS 4.0 changed all that. Nighthaunt is a truly horrifying army, sometimes ending the game in a single turn. From their mobility to their damage, there isn’t much the Nighthaunt can’t do. I know we’re still early in the game, but I foresee great things for Nagash’s favorite shock warriors.
The Good: EVERYTHING!
I’m not exaggerating here; the Nighthaunt are off the chains (pun intended). They can redeploy some of their nastiest units, charge OUT OF COMBAT, and debuff anything they charge. Nighthaunt were always a shock army in the lore, but sometimes, the rules didn’t treat them that way. In 4.0, you feel like you’re playing the ghosts from Lord of the Rings. They appear from nowhere, decimate the enemy lines, and then redeploy to do it all again.
Even the Myrnmourn Banshees, a bit of a throwaway in the olden days, are viable now. They can lay down an unholy amount of damage and keep your fragile ghosts safe from spellcasting. Truly, there’s nothing this army can’t contend with—well…except one thing.
The Bad: It Won’t Last
It’s the same song and dance as ever; if an army gets too powerful and isn’t clad in Sigmarite or Power armor, it gets the nerf hammer. Currently, Nighthaunt is overwhelmingly dominating the competitive meta, and that will have to change soon. My only hope is that the nerfs bring Nighthaunt back in line but don’t rob them of the things that make them cool.
