Critical Role and the makers of Midst announced a new “experimental four-part miniseries” today. Check out Moonward.

You might recall early last year that Critical Role acquired Midst, a semi-improvised storytelling podcast/audio drama set in its own space westerny paranormal sci-fi world. And if you don’t recall that, I don’t blame you. It’s been a long year.

But, today, both Critical Role and production studio Third Person announced Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story, which is, in their words “an experimental four-part miniseries” coming August 7th.

What does that mean? Well, if you’re familiar with Midst, you have some idea of their storytelling. They’re back at it with a new adventure. And bringing two of Critical Role’s founders with them.

Critical Role Announces Moonward

If you’re not familiar with Midst or Moonward, you should know going into it that there are no dice and no rules in Moonward. Which is maybe part of the experimental aspect of the miniseries. But even more so seems to be the video aspect of it.

In a press release for Moonward, Critical Role mentions “an immersive experience”:

Moonward continues Midst‘s legacy of experimental storytelling, offering an immersive experience. The series offers a unique, front-row seat to how Third Person crafts their audio dramas, combining live audio, music, and lighting effects to create a dynamic multimedia experience. Viewers will be transported to a black box theater setting where each player contributes to the unfolding narrative in real-time, providing a front-row seat to an innovative storytelling journey.

And from the trailer you can see some of that in action. The video element will provide a new texture, allowing for these “dynamic lighting effects”. If you want to see more, you’ll have to wait until Wednesday, August 7th when the first episode premieres at 9pm Central Time on Critical Role’s Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as Midst’s YouTube Channel.
