As a traveling merchant in Rokugan on the River of Gold, what you sell is only half as important as who you sell it to.

In River of Gold, players are river merchants trading their goods and wares along the aforementioned river. The game is set in the world of Rogukan, from Legend of the Five Rings. Players will buy and sell goods, gain favor with the different clans, invest in infrastructure along the river, and (hopefully) become be dominant economic force on the most profitable trading route in the world.

River of Gold Overview

River of Gold is a competitive economic strategy game where players are looking to earn the most money to earn victory points. On their turns, players will move their ships along the river, buy trade goods, invest in buildings along the river, and sell their goods to different buyers.

Each player represents a different clan. The clan board holds the player’s goods, money, and divine favor. Divine favor can influence which clans the player can sell to in a given turn.

Throughout the game, players will be buying up different trade goods. Then, deliver the goods to the other traders on the river. Each trader has a specific set of goods they want to buy and will offer bonuses to those who can deliver.

Plus, players can invest in buildings along the river. Buildings allow any player to gain a bonus when they stop by. But, the owner of the building gains a bonus anytime the building is used, even by themselves. Constructing a vital building at a key location is an easy way to buff your income for future turns.

Players can also gain influence with the various clans of Rokugan. Each clan will provide victory points to the trader they like the most.

Thanks to the multiple systems within the game, River of Gold allows multiple paths to victory. Focusing on trading, building, or influence can all be viable strategic options.

How will your clan become the dominant force along this River of Gold?
