Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Thor & Loki Rules Preview – Asgardians Assemble!
The new Asgardian Character pack is coming soon and Atomic Mass Games is showing off rules for (one) Thor and Loki!
I’m excited about the new Character Pack coming to Marvel: Crisis Protocol. It features Mighty Thor, Lady Sif, Thor, Hero of Midgard, and Loki, Prince of lies. While the title of the pack is certainly a mouthful, the characters inside are awesome. I can verify that because AMG sent us a review copy!
I was going to do the traditional unboxing and miniatures pictures today but AMG has just recently posted a new Panel to Play article featuring the rules for Thor, Hero of Midgard and Loki, Prince of Lies. So, I’m going to talk rules today and we’ll do the unboxing/miniatures showcase later this week!
Thor, Hero of Midgard
Let’s just start off with Thor. In this incarnation he’s an absolute unit. He’s got a defensive block that should make other jealous with 4/4/4. He’s got 9 stamina on the healthy side and “only” 8 on the injured side. That’s really the only difference between the two sides as well. He does come in at size 3 which is worth noting for cover purposes. He’s also got Flight with a move of medium. But you get all that in a threat level 6 character. Yikes.
His first attack is a “builder” attack dubbed Odinson’s Ire. This range 3 energy attack costs 0 energy has a base of 7(!!!) dice! So yeah, before we even get to what the attack does it’s already a freaking steal of a deal. Not only does Thor get to generate energy based on damage dealt, on a wild it triggers Lightning Arc. And basically, for each wild result you get to zap an enemy with range 3 of the target for 1 damage. If you manage to get a wild and a hit it also triggers push. This one simply pushes the target a short distance.
Thor’s “spender” is appropriately named I Would Have Words With Thee! It costs 4 energy but is also range 3 and is 10 dice base! It’s a physical attack that also allows you to place Thor with range 1 of the target, too. That’s a nice bit of movement tech included. And if the target is size 4 or less, Thor can throw them Away a medium distance. This is a great gap closer.
Have at Thee! is his first superpower and it costs 3 energy. It’s a free throw on …himself. This is more movement that’s also range medium. If/when Thor connects with someone he doesn’t take damage however. The other party in the collision does however. Because of his size, that’s just basically a medium range 4 damage hit. The Power of Thor also costs 3 and is another option to throw things. And this throw is Long. This also allows him to toss things up to size 4 or less. That’s a potent toss with the right sized terrain on the table!
If that wasn’t enough, he also has I Say Thee NAY, Villain! which also costs 3 energy but is based off of getting hit. This is a retaliatory ability that lets you roll 7 dice and for each crit and wild the attacker takes 1 damage. Oh, and if you think energy might be an issue for Thor remember that he’s an Asgardian so he gets 1 additional power per power phase. And for good measure he’s immune to shock (because of course he is).
I’m not saying Thor, Hero of Midgard is busted as he is threat level 6. But that’s a potent 6 threat to spend on him! I kinda want to include him in every list I can fit him in now… OH and I almost forgot the Team Tactic card that was also teased with him:
If Thor’s attacks don’t get you his friends just might!
Loki, Prince of Lies
Loki is no joke in this incarnation either. Boasting a defensive statline of 4/4/5 with 7 stamina on his healthy side and 6 on his damaged side he’s kinda beefy. He also moves long and is size 2 — not too shabby to start for a threat level 5 character. His attacks are both mystic based which actually really compliments Thor’s Energy and Physical attacks.
First up his “builder” is Mischiefs and Magicks. It’s range 3 and 6 dice which is already really good. If you get a crit and a wild you also trigger Bamboozle. This allows you to move the target character short and then apply a root to them as well. This is a mean attack. His “spender” attack is Clever Ploy. It’s an AoE range 3 for 5 dice and costs 4 energy. That’s a BIG AoE hit though. It’s also a smart attack that doesn’t damage allied characters caught in the blast. Additionally, if the attack does damage then it also allows you to advance the target character(s) short.
Just based on these rules so far you can tell Loki is going to manipulate the enemy and make them move where he needs them to be — either off objectives or towards the bigger hitter in his squad. That’s some good utility. And then we get to his Leadership ability I Come Bearing Gifts. Affiliated characters can spend an energy on an attack or defense roll to “buy” a re-roll. If they do, then Loki gains an energy. This is quite the deal as the target character gets a re-roll and the energy just goes to another character in your squad.
So what will Loki spend all that energy on? Well he’s got two superpowers that are worth using. First up is Go Forth! This just places an allied character within range 2 of its current location. It costs 2 energy but those shifts can be super useful. Next is a reactive power Oh My, What A Pity and it’s a way to punish enemies that attack Loki and his team. If they are in range of Loki, you can spend 1 energy and the attacker takes a damage if they had any skulls in the dice roll. It’s chip damage but that can really add up as there’s no limit to the number of times you can use it — only the energy cost. But it synergizes extremely well with his leadership ability…
Finally, also an Asgardian and also has This Isn’t Mischief, This Is Mayhem. This allow Loki to add enemy skull results to his total successes when attacking or defending.
Considering both of these characters are in the same pack for Asgardians, this is already a really solid 11 threat level roster! They are both extremely tough and have movement and all sorts of damage covered. I can’t wait to show off the rest of this box and the miniatures included. It’s a real winner.
Their Character Pack is currently up for pre-order on Asmodee’s webstore. It has a slated release date of August 2, 2024. If you’ve ever wanted to dabble with the Asgardian faction this is the box for you!
