Necromunda is venturing into the dreaded Hive Secundus and The Book of Desolation is your roadmap and rules get there.

Games Workshop has announced a new book for Necromunda. This is a companion book/campaign book for Hive Secundus. You’re not going to want to venture into the depths without it.

“This book adds a wealth of new content for Necromunda focusing on the Secundan Abyss. It follows on from the Necromunda: Hive Secundus boxed set – a standalone game set within the Underhells – by taking full multiplayer campaigns into the depths. There are four new gang rosters, new Dramatis Personae such as the terrifying Malstrain Alpha, and loads of extras to spice up your games.”

Book of Desolation – What’s In The Book?

First up, the rules for four new gangs are going to be in The Book of Desolation. There’s the new Malstrain Gang, The Malstrain Corrupted Gang, Spyrer Hunting Party, and the Secundan Incursion Gang. From what we can gather the Malstrain Gang is designed solely for use in an Underhells Campaign.

The Malstrain Corrupted Gang is what happens when a limited number of Malstrain Fighters “infiltrate” other gangs. These play like variants of the existing gangs in Necromunda. The Secundan Incursion Gang is a similar thing, but you’re just swapping your gang leader for a Spyrer. The Spyrer Hunting Parties are typically only three to four fighters — but they are all Spyrers. And don’t let their low numbers fool you…

The Book of Desolation also comes with additional rules for Underhells Campaigns. You’ve got various Dramatis Personae to recruit. There’s the Malstrain Alpha, Hermiatus the Second Son, and the new version of Lady Haera Helmawr. There’s also two new Abyssal Ferrymen teams you can add to your gang. House Van Saar also has access to a new specialist known as a Tek-Hunter.

“All of this is wrapped up in the new Underhells Campaign system – a dramatic narrative adventure that tasks players with breaching the seemingly impenetrable Dust Wall surrounding Hive Secundus, surviving the arduous trek across the exclusion zone beyond, and plundering the ruins for fame, glory, and riches (mostly riches).”

If you’re looking to pick-up a copy of Hive Secundus then do yourself a favor and grab The Book of Desolation, too. Personally, I’m very curious just to read-up on the Malstrains in particular. I’m also curious what this means moving forward for Necromunda. Are we about to see a Malstrain infestation spread to Hive Primus? That could have some dire consequences…
