Modiphius announced an official RPG for Space: 1999, the 70’s sci-fi series, coming early next year. Get your 2d20 ready.

Space: 1999 is getting its own tabletop RPG from developer Modiphius. They’re partnering with Anderson Entertainment to bring the world of Moonbase Alpha to life for the 1975 TV series’ 50th anniversary celebration. There’s already a trailer for it, and it is everything you would hope it would be.

This marks another beloved sci-fi franchise under Modiphius’ belt. They’ve also got Fallout, Dune, and Star Trek, so you know, there’s something of a pedigree there. It does mean that the new game will be powered by the 2D20 engine, which is great news if you love it and an opportunity to learn to love it if you don’t.

Space: 1999 The Roleplaying Game

Just listen to that soundtrack. That should tell you everything you need to know. And if you’re sitting here wondering, “What is Space: 1999?” I won’t blame you. I had to look it up myself. Space: 1999 was a British sci-fi series that told the story of Moonbase Alpha after a nuclear explosion on Earth sent our satellite hurtling into deep space.

An interesting premise with a poignant anti-war message, all the hallmarks of really good science fiction. And all just in time for the 25th anniversary of the show. In a press release for the game, we get a look at the kinds of characters you can play:

Moonbase Alpha needs your help. With the new Space: 1999 Roleplaying Game core rule book you and friends can join the crew of Moonbase Alpha on their missions of exploration. Share their journey into the infinite frontiers of space and time.

Players can choose to be an adventurous pilot, a stalwart security guard, a bold commander, an audacious medic or any one of the 311 inhabitants of the base. Whatever you choose, each mission puts the future of Moonbase Alpha in your hands. What will you do to rise to the challenge on the frontier of space?

What’s really interesting is the sort of net that both Anderson Entertainment and Modiphius are casting here. Looking over on the Anderson Entertainment website, and more specifically their FAQs, it seems like a big part of their audience is people who like the show but aren’t necessarily familiar with RPGs and might be wondering, “Do I need a computer to play?” It’ll be neat to see what kind of splash this will make in the scene.
