Space Marine 2: Prepare To Unload On The Tyranid Swarms
Focus Entertainment is back with another look at the Tyranid Swarms coming to Warhammer: Space Marine 2. You better bring the big guns.
I’ve said it before but I’m pretty hyped up for Space Marine 2. I was a big fan of the first game and have been waiting for this sequel for a long time. The fact that the game is made by the same studio that worked on the World War Z game is a huge plus. They managed to cram thousands of Zombies on the screen for players to shoot. Now they are using a modified version of that tech to bring the Tyranid Swarm to digital life. Check this out:
The Tyranid Swarm
I’ve been a long time Tyranid player. I have my own Tyranid Swarm but even when I’m playing that style of list it never quite captures the overwhelming feeling that this trailer has for me. There’s just SO many Tyranid creatures moving. It’s like a carpet of ‘gaunts rushing forward and overtaking the ground itself. You can see them in the distance. And you can shoot them at range. But their numbers just keep coming. The really terrifying thing is that you get no repreve when you look into the sky either…
I’m not 100% sure of those Tyranid Gargoyles are there just to harass the aircraft, are just for show, or will turn on a dime and eat Titus alive. All three prospects are scary to me. Regardless, it’s impressive to see the swarms from both the ground level and the skies.
It’s also going to be a little disconcerting to watch the swarm start to spill out of other areas, too. It’s one thing to see them from a distance and be able to shoot them at long range (preferably with a very large bolter). It’s another to have the just show up a couple dozen meters from your position. Also, you don’t know how many are going to come out of those vents. At least you’ve got some friends in this scene to help you thin the swarm.
Safety In Melee?
Once the swarm actually gets to you (and it will) your only hope is to swap to melee and go to town. I believe this game uses a similar system to health regen that the first game did — meaning that you can actually recover “armor” from close combat. There’s a series of “executions” you can perform that are cinematic ways to finish off those foes. I do like the swirling melee that is happening around the Space Marines in this game.
My one concern is that we don’t really see the Tyranids leap in and attack. If a single Space Marine was surrounded by Hormagaunts, he’s be in trouble mostly due to all those fangs and claws attacking in unison. Think of a school of piranha attacking. But, let’s be fair, this is going to be a video game and we’re basically playing as Movie Marines. Or perhaps “lore accurate” Marines. That said, close combat looks visceral and bloody. Nah, down right gory. The machine spirit is going to demand a deep-cleaning after this campaign!
Space Marine 2 is coming to a whole bunch of platforms on September 9, 2024. You better get your squad ready. The swarm is coming…
I wonder if we’ll have unlimited ammo or not.
