Warhammer: The Old World – New Dwarf Miniatures Showcase
Games Workshop is showing off the new Dwarf miniatures coming to Warhammer: The Old World. Prepare to battle their Mountain Holds!
There’s a new batch of Dwarfen Mountain Holds gathering for war in Warhammer: The Old World. They are going up for pre-order this weekend. Alongside some old favorites we’re also seeing some brand new Dwarfs for the first time in ages. Now GW is giving us a better look at the Dwarfs and their new characters you can take!
Dwarf Lords with Shield Bearers
“I believe that the new Lord in plastic is one of the prettiest models we’ve released in years,” says Danny. He’s not wrong – this kit contains two multipart, multi-option Dwarf Lords, one on foot and the other held aloft by three especially muscular Shieldbearers. The heads and weapons are interchangeable, and either one of them can stand atop the shield – which grants +3 Wounds, making an already resolute Dwarf absolutely immovable. Better yet, they’re in modern plastic, demonstrating what’s possible for the Warhammer: The Old World Range moving forwards.
I’ll be honest, I’ve never really been a fan of the Dwarf armies from Warhammer Fantasy. Their rules and playstyle never really appealed to me. But, even though I’m not a fan of the army, I can still appreciate these new Dwarf Lords. The sculpts are really impressive and have just enough ornamentation to show off their Dwarf wealth and stature — but not so much as to make them “gaudy and unfit for battle.”
I personally think this is going to be the best kit out of the three here. And that’s in no small part due to the fact that it’s plastic! It’s really impressive overall.
Dwarf Thane with Handgun
You know if this one was also coming as a plastic kit that would have been ideal. However, it’s going to be a resin miniature. And that’s fine if you want to order it directly from GW. It’s just a shame because it won’t be carried by standard store stockists. That’s one big issue I have with The Old World in general…but that’s a tangent for another rant.
Anyhow, this is a neat model regardless. I’m getting Dwarf Engineer vibes from this particular Thane. Which checks out considering that as a unit he is supposed link up with a unit of Thunderers. With the right combo of runes he can be quite devastating.
Ungrim Ironfist, the Slayer King of Karak Kadrin
This Dwarf is the one and only Ungrim Ironfist. This miniature rocks, hands down. The only note I have is that it’s too bad it’s not going to be a plastic kit. Still, that doesn’t take away from the awesome sculpt and history of this model.
“This stunning rendition of Ungrim Ironfist, the renowned Slayer King of Karak Kadrin, is a very different proposition to his earlier incarnation – which was sculpted in 1993. He’s younger, prouder, brasher, more dynamic, and, most importantly of all, shirtless. This is a young, vital king of the Slayer Hold, committed to finding the through line between the burden of the Slayer vow that has dogged his bloodline for generations and the Oath of Kingship he is similarly bound to uphold.”
It’s apparently the changes in sculpting technology when you look at these two miniatures side-by-side. Clearly, the new model takes inspiration from the old model. There’s some great callbacks. I know that these two miniature represent the same character at two different points in time as well. It’s kind of fun to think that the Dwarf on the right will eventually turn into the one on the left.
If you’re going to take Ungrim Ironfist you’re also able to build a different list than the one from the Boxed Set coming. So have fun with that — especially if you have an Old School Slayer miniatures!
