In Defenders of the Wild, the woodlands are under attack by a horde of killer robots! Their factories are polluting the forest and must be destroyed!

Imagine a crazy combination of Catan, Root, and Bloc By Bloc and you might have something similar to Defenders of the Wild. Granted, comparing it to Bloc by Bloc is cheating a little. They were designed by the same people and is clearly some level of spiritual successor.

Defenders of the Wild Overview

Defenders of the Wild is a cooperative tactical game where players take on the role of woodland factions. Each faction has a role to play in defending the woodlands against the incoming machine invasion. There can be no quarter, only once the threat is fully destroyed can there be peace. Or else the woodlands will be naught but metal and concrete!

In Defenders of the Wild, each round begins with players each silently choosing their defender card for the round. The defender card will determine how many action points they get on their turn, as well as provide a bonus.

Players actions will be things like move around the board, destroy the walls build by the machines, reclaim the land ruined by the factories, build camps, and things like that. However, afterwards, the machines get to go. Using another deck of cards, the machines will instruct their robots to rampage through the forest, building walls, spreading pollution, and the like.

There are no resources to collect, to trading to be done, but players still need to work together in order to complete their ultimate goal of saving the woodlands. If one player gets a little too greedy with their own actions, they might end up causing more harm than good.

Plus, defender cards are best gained through aggressive action. So, unless every player is frequently aggressive, they might find themselves low (but never out) of options.
