Games To Make Back-to-School Almost Fun
Whether or not you’re excited for this back to school season, there are lots of games that will make school seem a little more fun.
It’s Labor Day Weekend and everyone is either at Dragon Con, heading back to school, or sending someone back to school. We get to start looking forward to cooler days as the summer is winding down, and before you know it that one neighbor will start putting out their earliest Halloween decorations. (It’s me, I’m the neighbor.) But right now there’s a lot of back to school happening. And these games will make that almost fun.
1. Kids on Brooms
Just because an RPG takes place in a school doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Kids on Brooms takes us to magic school to learn spells, fly on brooms, brew potions, and meet fantastical creatures. Many of us have been looking for a new magical home lately, and Kids on Brooms let’s you build your own. Not too many games actually have you pretend to attend a school and take classes, but Kids on Brooms does it in the best way possible. With magic.
2. Alice is Missing
Alice is Missing is a much less traditional tabletop RPG with a much different tone. You’re a normal kid in a normal small town and one day your friend and classmate is missing. So of course, you and your fellow high school students are on the case. The premise is a little dark on its face, and you get the impression that things have the potential to get dangerous for your characters, but sometimes that how’s TTRPGs are. What makes this game stand out though, is the silent gameplay. Players use their phones to message each other as they investigate what happened to Alice. This makes Alice is Missing perfect for remote play.
3. Monsters and Other Childish Things
Yet another very different game, Monsters and Other Childish Things has you take on the role of a young kid with an invisible best friend who happens to be a monster. Does this game take place in a school? It doesn’t have to. But your monster may get you in trouble with your teachers and principal just as easily with your parents and friends. This one sounds like it could be dark and a little spooky, but it’s actually very fun and silly.
4. Alma Mater
It’s the early 15th century, Universities are being established, and you want to help your school have the best reputation and standing of all of the new independent universities. It’s a very goal based and competitive game that sounds a little snooty, but is actually really easy to get a little to into.
5. Trekking Through History
You know we needed one edutainment game on this list, and if you’re a history nerd this one will be for you. Journey through historical events and learn everything you can before the time is up. The original art is beautiful, the history fun facts are actually fun, and the game is created by historians, so the information is legit. This may not be for you and if that’s the case, that’s cool. But if you’re the person in your group who has a whole bunch of ‘teach me something’ podcasts downloaded at all times, this is a gamethat should be on your shelf.
