Fans stay winning. LANCER: Operation Winter Scar, the follow-up to Solstice Rain, brings a whole new License (mech) to the game and then some.

LANCER is one of my favorite RPGs, so the news that a new Splatbook hit today was already exciting. But the more I read about LANCER: Operation Winter Scar, the more excited I am for it. Operation Winter Scar is a follow-up to the excellent teaching module Operation Solstice Rain, which I heartily recommend for anyone looking to get into LANCER. But LANCER: Operation Winter Scar has more to offer than just a new campaign or “structured mission module,” as the book’s copy describes it.

It also adds a whole new Mech to the game in the form of a brand new license, the Harrison Armory Gilgamesh, as well as three new Variant Frames and a new class of NPCs.

If you wanted to get your very own LANCER campaign started, you could pick up Operation Solstice Rain and roll right from there into Operation Winter Scar and be well on your way. You’d have to take the ball from there (for now), but what a setup.

LANCER: Operation Winter Scar

The conflict on Cressidium between the Leandric States Alliance and the Vestan Sovereignty has turned to open war, and the mechanized chassis pilots of the Union carrier Rio Grande have been tasked with aiding their allies in the LSA as the hardline Vestan government escalates the conflict even further

Now, as part of Task Force Indigo, they face one of their most critical missions yet: inserting deep into Vestan territory, linking up with local resistance forces, and then tracking down the top secret Vestan superweapon codenamed TARTARUS. Success here could turn the tide of the war, but the Sovereignty won’t give up without a fight.

Of course, you don’t have to have Solstice Rain in order to play through Winter Scar, though Massif Press does recommend it.

Operation Winter Scar will take characters from License Level 2 – 4 over the span of two missions. There are six new combat scenes spread across the two missions, with fully illustrated tactical maps formatted by both wretched square grid users and godlike hex grid users.

But you also get:

  • The HA Gilgamesh – A resilient all-rounder that can eject damaged parts to perform mid-combat repairs, the Gilgamesh is a new license focused on the use of Limited weapons and systems, including the reliable Legionnaire Battle Rifle, versatile Utility Drones, and the Legion Nexus which allows you to command a unit of combat subalterns into battle.
  • New Variant Frames – The SSC Amber Phantom grants pilots effective precognition during combat and rewards advanced planning, the HORUS Lycan begins each combat as an unassuming Defender until shedding its carapace and extending brutal Shock Claws, and the HA Kutuzov takes the Napoleon’s famous survivability and turns it outward with a series of parallel-tracked shield projectors for close-quarters protection.
  • New NPC Class – The MBT, a main battle tank with a reinforced armored facing and multiple weapon options, allowing you to create your own battlefield juggernaut.
  • New NPC TemplateMarine, a template which grants NPCs zero-gravity maneuverability along with a suite of Defender role options, from Pointman Plating to help protect allies to the brutal Captive Spike, which turns hapless boarders into improvised cover.

You’ll also get the .lcp for the COMP//CON files, so all this will be instantly added to the best LANCER digital tool out there. Trust me, if you’re going to play, you’ll want to use COMP//CON, but it’s free, so there’s no reason not to.
