A teaser for an upcoming D&D Preview stream revealed just how nostalgic the D&D team is for the ’83 cartoon.

These days we’re getting teasers for teasers. It’s a regular Inception kind of thing over here. Which, I’d welcome if it meant having to fight in a spinning hotel room with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Or that my dreams were designed by Elliot Page.

Instead all we get is a hint of a hint. But, I guess for “reality” if you can call it that, it’ll have to do. So it is that we got a glimpse of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide which is going to be on display in a coming preview, titled D&D Direct. We’ll get to see some other stuff there as well, but for now, feast your eyes on this quick little snapshot inspired by nostalgia for the bygone days of the D&D cartoon.

We’ll get to the meat of the preview in a second. But. That text up there reads, “Hank draws his Energy Bow,” and it’s taken from a page of the DMG that features the following items:

  • Elemental Gem
  • Elixir of Health
  • Elven Chain
  • Energy Bow

And make no mistake, that’s Hank the Ranger from the D&D Cartoon. The cartoon party can be found throughout the art, items, text, and background of the new edition. They’ve had quite the glow-up, and this isn’t me reading into things from my tinfoil hat, either.

They’ve had quite the glow-up, and this isn’t me reading into things from my tinfoil hat, either. It’s literally a tweet from the main D&D Twitter Account.

Someone on the design team/executive team must really have a soft spot for Hank, Eric, Sheila, Diana, Bobby, and, of course, Presto the Wizard. You gotta wonder about a guy whose parents named him Presto. And make no mistake, that was his earth name—poor kid. Being in the 9th grade named Presto is the kind of thing I’d wish on an enemy. Not my worst one, but you know, someone I didn’t like.

Anyway, you’ll be able to see more of the D&D cartoon characters’ glow-up at D&D Direct, which promises a look ahead at “The Future of D&D.”

Here’s the D&D Direct Lineup:

As the official release of the 2024 Player’s Handbook draws near, we’ll be taking you for a last peek before you can start playing with the revised rules! You’ll get a closer look at the stunning artwork throughout the book and more.
