Warren Worthington III is coming to Marvel: Crisis Protocol in both of his forms. Let’s see what Angel can do on the tabletop!

Atomic Mass Games has dropped some new info on the iconic Marvel character Angel. His story is a rollercoaster of sacrifice, loss, villainy, and ultimately redemption. There’s a lot to unpack there. But for now we’re just going to dive into how Warren Worthington III will function on the tabletop in Marvel: Crisis Protocol! Let’s bust out those rules.

Angel In Marvel: Crisis Protocol

Kicking things off with his stats he’s a Threat Level 3 character with 5/5 on the stamina front and a defensive stat line of 3/3/3. Nothing too crazy here to write home about. He’s got a medium move as well and with the larger base that’s decent mobility. He’s also got Healing Factor 1 and Flight. Angel isn’t going to have too much trouble getting around the board and has okay staying power thanks to those.

His basic builder is neat. Flyby give him an energy for each time he makes an attack. It also allows him a “free” move with a placement, too. Considering this is a Beam 3, that’s a way to get a LOT of extra movement. It’s only 4 dice though, so really it’s good you can get the extra move on top of that. His big spender attack is Avenging Angel. It’s range 3 and 7 dice for 3 energy. It allows you to throw targets size 3 or less short. And it can stun targets, too.

Finally, we get into his two powers. First is Air Lift. For 2 energy you can give your allies a free ride. Not too bad as you can really gain some distance out of this for your allies. Hostile Takeover allows for a short Push on an enemy character towards Angel for 2 energy. This one feels more like a “setup for something else ” type of power.

Now, before we jump into Archangel, we need to touch on two of the team tactic cards that come with this character.

I’m sure you can understand the synergy between these two cards. Ultimate Sacrifice allows for you to throw Angel in the way so that he takes the hit for another character. That character then heals up to 3 damage and removes all conditions. Following that up, you can use Fallen to swap out Angel for Archangel and that’s a power move right there! Is it worth two team tactic cards to do it? Well, not only are you denying the attack but you’re healing another character. Plus you’re actually getting a bit of an upgrade to Archangel…

Archangel In Marvel: Crisis Protocol

If you’re unfamiliar with Archangel, he’s the Horsemen of the Apocalypse powered-up version of Angel. In modern comics, he can swap back and forth between the forms. We won’t get into that here…but it’s a thing. Anyhow, in MCP this represents a specific point in his life.  He’s gotten juiced up from Apocalypse and is ready to dish out some pain.

He comes in as a Threat Level 4 character with a stamina pool of 5/6 and defensive stats of 4/3/4. He still moves medium and has flight but, compared to Angel, he doesn’t have Healing Factor 1. His basic builder attack is Razor Wing Strike and it’s range 3 and 5 dice. He generates energy based on the damage dealt now, too. Additionally, if you get a wild (more on that below) you can apply a Bleed or Poison. Or both if you get two or more wilds. If you get a Crit, you can also use Overwing to place him with range 1 of his target.

His spender is Avatar of Death. For 3 energy you get a range 3, 7 die attack. This attack also generates Neurotoxin on wilds. For starters, this causes the target to get hit with the Stagger condition. And if that same target also has Bleed and Poison, then it also gains an activated token if it didn’t already have one instead of Stagger! It’s a nice little wombo-combo if you can set it up.

Archangel also comes with Charge for 2. This is an Action that allows him to make a move followed up with an attack. We’ve seen this on loads of characters before. He also has Wing Shield for 2 energy. I’m pretty sure this is supposed to have a reactive icon on the card…but whatever. Anyhow, when he is targeted by physical or energy attacks or is making a dodge roll you can use this to add 2 dice to your defense roll.

And finally we have Chosen of Apocalypse. This is the power that really make his attacks work. This allows you to swap out 1 of your hit die results for a wild in each attack roll! I think this is a neat power and really helps “sell” Archangel to me.

Is he worth swapping for? I think so. Fortunately both versions come in the same box. So if you’ve got one you’ve likely got the other in your collection. And even if you don’t use the Ultimate Sacrifice/Fallen combo, you can still bring Fallen in. You’ll get to upgrade a Threat 3 character for a Threat 4 and that’s worth a team tactic card slot to me!

The Angel & Archangel Character Pack is currently up for pre-order from Asmodee or your FLGS!
