The Man Who Never Lived restored the mighty Dragonlords to Tarkir. Whether that was for good or ill depends on who you ask.

Welcome, Praetors and Planeswalkers, to our ongoing series about the people and places that help make Magic the Gathering incredible. From great heroes and deadly villains to gorgeous locales, the Multiverse constantly evolves to keep the game fresh. Even if you don’t know anything about the story, all the background drives your favorite cards from place to place. You can check out all the previous MTG goodness over here.

Atarka and her brood

When he followed Ugin’s guidance to the past, Sarkhan defeated the planeswalker Nicol Bolas and saved the Spirit Dragon. With this action, he brought the mighty Dragonlords back to the realm and restored them to rule. These tyrannical rulers drastically altered the face of Tarkir, restoring it to its former glory. The Clans of old had never existed, and in their place, five mighty dragons took rulership of the plane.

Dragonlord Dromoka (Green/White)

Dromoka, one of the Dragonlords

Make her roost in the Great Aerie, which replaced the ruined desert of the previous timeline; Dromoka is a proud being. She and her brood are doughty, tough creatures, just and fair but deadly in battle. The warriors of the Abzan revered her, and like them, her brood took the Scale of the Dragon as their symbol. However, she and her brood abhorred the Abzan ancestor worship, viewing the necromantic practice of spirit summoning as an insult to the honored dead. In its place, the Dromoka bond themselves to the brood.

Dragonlord Ojutai (White/Blue)

Ojutai, one of the Dragonlords

A being of heightened intellect and cunning, the Dragonlord Ojutai makes his roost in the frozen peaks of Tarkir’s mountains. He and his brood are revered by the Jeskai, who value his strategic genius and cunning nature. His brood took the Eye of the Dragon as their symbol, representing the patient watcher who waits and plans for the right time to strike. Unlike the other dragons, he and his brood rarely engage in battle directly, preferring to meditate and seek enlightenment in their mountain temples.

Dragonlord Silumgar (Black/Blue)

Silumgar, one of the Dragonlords

The venomous Dragonlord Silumgar languishes in an ancient temple on the Marang River of Tarkir. Cruel and covetous, he and his brood collect treasures and items of arcane significance and horde them beyond the reach of others. The Sultai revere his brood and respect their ruthlessness and willingness to take what they want. Silumgar, like the Sultai before him, took the symbol of the Fang of the Dragon, representing the need to consume and covet all they survey.

Dragonlord Kolaghan (Black/Red)

Kolaghan, one of the Dragonlords

Mistress of the mighty storms over the steppes, Kolaghan is both the largest and the most feral of the Dragonlords. She does not appear able to speak and only communicates with flashes of lightning and acts of great violence. Unlike her contemporary Atarka, she does not hunt for food, only for the thrill of the chase and the kill. The Mardu revere her brood for their ruthless and bloodthirsty nature and the speed of their attacks. To represent this great speed, they have taken the Wings of the Dragon as their symbol.

Dragonlord Atarka (Green/Red)

Atarka, one of the Dragonlords

The final Dragonlord is Atarka, the mighty huntress of the frozen wasteland. She and her brood are the perfect hunters, and they are perfectly suited to hunting down their prey in any environment. They are the closest to traditional “dragons,” with a breath of fire and powerful hunting instincts. The nomadic Temur revere her and her brood for their tenacity and strength. As such, Atarka’s brood has adopted the Claw of the Dragon, symbolizing their ferocity.
