Take a Trip to ‘Discworld’ With These Games and Accessories
If you want a fandom to fall (back) into that’s fun, thoughtful, and just a little silly, these Discworld picks are a feel-good pass time.
I’ve been in the mood to revisit the Discworld series again. They’re some of the best and most imaginative fantasy out there. And maybe even better, they’re fun and funny while managing to be thoughtful and touch on real and eternally relevant human issues. If you somehow have managed to not fall into any of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld yet, this is your sign to pick up a few books.
1. The Books
Obviously if you’ve already read through Discworld, you can skip this part. But if you haven’t, welcome! You’re in for a real treat. But where do you start? There’s a ton of these books. Well, the good news is it doesn’t matter where you start or what order you read in. In fact, most people specifically recommend against reading in publishing order. I started with Mort, but you can start anywhere. So jump in and enjoy. Now that you’re up to speed.
2. Discworld RPG
Did you know there was a Discworld tabletop RPG? Well there is in the form of a sourcebook for the GURPs system… Actually just kidding, there’s more than one. The open-endedness of GURPs make it a perfect system for something as silly and far-reaching as Discworld. And while you could build many aspects of Discworld and the characters there for a GURPs setting on your own, this book does all of thatt work for you. But this is also a relatively crunchy TTRPG system, especially by 20204’s standards. The extra steps may be worth it to hang out in Ankh-Morpork for a bit.
3. Clacks
Does a board game based on a book about delivering mail sound like a strange concept? Of course. But that’s exactly what this is. And just like the book it’s based on, it’s so much more fun in than it should be. Play as a team and race across the world to be the fastest Clacks operator out there.
4. Discworld for Playstation
Do you still have an OG Playstation somewhere in your home? Are you a collector of oldish videogames? I’m not sure how many of these there are anymore, but if you’re a very specific kind of collector, it could be yours. Travel around as a wizard, chat with people, and solve puzzles. It looks simple, but very charming. I never had the chance to play this myself, so unfortunately I have no first-hand experience.
5. Coloring Book
We’ve had a long day of reading books and playing all sorts of different games, so it’s time to wind down. Maybe with this coloring book! Adult coloring books are a really peaceful way to pass some time. They’re pretty much exactly what you remember from childhood, only with more details and more grown-up subjects. Like wizards and a giant space turtle.
