See if you can find the stars in the Starfinder 2E Playtest, which went live at Gen Con this year. How has the sci-fi RPG changed? Find out!

The Starfinder 2E playtest launched this weekend at Gen Con, ushering in a bold new era for Paizo’s sci-fi RPG. Now, more than ever, it is like Pathfinder in space because, in the new ruleset, the remastered Pathfinder 2E rules are at the core of it all. This is to help unify the two systems, which is handy, but also to help divest even Starfinder of the OGL content in its rules.

This should show you just how pervasive the OGL was in the tabletop sphere and why it was such a big deal when WotC planned to make it an “invalid” license back in 2023. But the new Starfinder promises more refinement and action.

The classes should live up to their fantasies in the best ways, whether that’s being a constant whirlwind of cosmic energy or making a cool laser even cooler. There are months in this playtest, so you have plenty of opportunity to get to it, folks.

Starfinder 2E Playtest – More Feats, New Rules, and More

The Starfinder Second Edition Playtest launched with the release of the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest Rulebook, Starfinder Playtest Adventure: A Cosmic Birthday, and Starfinder Playtest Scenarios 1 & 2: Shards of the Glass Planet and It Came From The Vast! The Starfinder Second Edition Playtest runs from August 1st through December 31st. Players and GMs alike are encouraged to test out 6 classes, 10 ancestries, magic items, spells, feats and more; feedback can be submitted via the surveys on starfinderplaytest.com!

In the playtest, you can find a free digital version of the book, which has everything you need to playtest the game. The new rulebook promises to stand entirely on its own while still being compatible. So, in theory, a game of Pathfinder 2E could transition to a game of Starfinder or vice versa.

Now, you, too, can live out your dreams of crash-landing your party of sci-fi heroes onto a fantasy planet and ruining everyone’s day.

In the playtest, there are six classes, 12 ancestries, and a whole host of new feats, equipment, and spells. And this is just the first wave, mind you. Surveys are coming soon, so fill them out. Your experience and opinions can help shape what the final products look like in 2025.
