Age of Sigmar: Skaven Regiments of Renown Make For Perfect Chaos Allies
If you’re playing a Chaos Army of any flavor prepare have some Skaven available to ally in. These Regiments of Renown seem rather useful!
This weekend we’re going to see the release of the new Skaven Battletome. And while not everyone plays Skaven, with the new Battletome, every Chaos player could now dip a toe in to the Gnawhole if they wanted. How? That’s all thanks to the Regiments of Renown coming. In total there are four to use but two of them can be taken as allies for other Chaos Armies.
Krittok’s Clawpack
First up we have the new Warlord Krittok and his Clawpack to check out. If you’re needing some surprisingly effective punch you can add them to your Chaos lists. Just be aware that they are definitely better when you’re ahead vs when you’re behind…
“The warlike reputation of Krittok Foulblade has spread far and wide amongst the forces of Chaos. Krittok’s Clawpack is a bodyguard force comprising his most loyal Stormvermin (at the time of writing) and a destructive pair of Doom-Flayers.”
I think this is an interesting option from a design standpoint. On one hand it does feel like a “win harder” rule. Which is to say that this group can help you secure your victory — which isn’t a bad thing. On the other hand, don’t expect them to be super effective when you’re the underdog. I guess the lesson here is to toss them in the fray regardless if you’re up OR down. If you’re up, the slaughter will be that much faster. And if you’re down, well, they make a better speed bump than objective holder…
Volk-Klaw’s Enginecoven
“Entrepreneurial Skaven like the Warlock Galvaneer Grisk Volk-Klaw have made a killing offering their labour (and powerful weapons batteries) to the highest bidders, exploiting the gap in the market for Chaos armies that usually eschew ranged wargarel.”
If you want to add some insanity to your Chaos lists then why not give these Warpstone powered weapons a try. Thanks to Volk-Klaw’s Enginecoven, you can bring some of the gnarliest weapons the Skaven have to offer.
You know, as a Chaos player myself, the idea of sprinkling in some Skaven ranged weapons is both appealing and also anathema to my playstyle. Could I live with my choice to add these weapons to my melee heavy army? Tactically, having some ranged threats is objectively a good idea. But subjectively…gross. And this subset of Skaven shooting would actually be pretty effective to boot thank to the extra +1 to hit and 3″ of range.
The Enginecoven consists of “a Warlock Galvaneer, a unit of three Warpvolt Scourgers, and a Ratling Warpbaster” all of which are taken at a discount vs their standard points cost. That’s actually very tempting. I think I’ll wait to see what the points end up landing on before I make any final decisions.
The Great-Grand Gnawhorde
The final Army of Renown that was teased was for Vizzik Skour. And just to be clear, this is a separate ARMY, not a group you can add to another Chaos army. That means it’s going to have “separate stipulations on which units may be included, with custom Battle Traits and Enhancements.”
To start, one of the bonus rules is Disciples of Vizzik. While this boost Vizzik’s ward up to a 4+ it’s basically redirecting that damage to a Gnawhorde unit within combat range of Vizzik. But that’s not all…
“His followers are afflicted by the Warpshatter Throes, which manifest as three Once Per Turn (Army) abilities, such as increased mobility in battle, or improved range for units with munitions. “
Honestly, this Army of Renown seems like a lot of fun in terms of flexibility. I’m curious to see the limitations on the army’s roster options and ultimately what the other Battle Traits and Enhancements are. Ultimately, if it’s just an excuse to run a Vizzik Skour themed list…that’s not a bad thing in my book!
The Skaven Battletome is coming to pre-order this weekend. I think Chaos Players might want to perk-up a bit for this one…
